[SoftPerfect Network Scanner] Network Scanner Hangs

I'm using Nework Scanner version 3.8 (build 174). As new versions are released, I keep updating the scanner with the newest version hoping it will solve a hang problem. My computer is using an AMD dual core processor, which might be the problem.

I can scan the network ONCE, and can generate an output file sometimes. Often just clicking the IP Address header to sort numerically will cause the program to hang. If I don't click the address header I can always generate an output file. Attempting most anything else will cause the scanner to lock up and I must use the "X" in the upper right corner to close the scanner. Sometimes that fails, and I must use task manager to close it.

I used this program on an earlier computer with a single core Pentium and never had a problem. Is there an AMD compatibility issue here or is the scanner confused by the dual cores?

Using WinXP SP2.

Thanks

Hi Andrew,

What should the rule look like in order to only monitor internet traffic?

BWM is installed on a 2003 server which is also the DHCP server. I do not have any shares or shared printers on the BWM server.

I am using the MAC addy as IPs change.
Should I turn the rule around?
I will use the network sniffer and have a look....

I'll second the request for multiple range support.

I have two networks on my machine, plus two virtual network adapters under VMware.
My ideal solution would be a feature that
1) identifies all adapters
2) auto-detects the ranges for each adapter
3) scans the combined set of ranges.

This should detect everything I am attached to,
and you already have all the functionality. its just a matter of tying it together under one menu item or toolbar icon.

Great product. Excellent advertisement for the rest of your range.

Hi Anton,

Your rule actually counts any traffic that originates from MAC 0019D192320B and goes to the BWM server or to the Internet. This could file file sharing or any other communications that may occur in your network between the client computer and BWM server. You may want to use a network sniffer to investigate what sort of traffic it is.

I am running Bandwidth Manager 2.7 (build 418).

Hi Andrew.

Did you ever get anywhere with the idea of being able to set different upstream/downstream rates for each rule?

It would be really useful to give an asynchronous speed combined with the port mapping. At the moment when using the port mapping, it's not possible to make it asynchronous.

Thanks for the great software, it's great what it can do.

Hi all...

I use proxy transparent feature too (with squid). But some services need to not use a transparent proxy to work correct.

Exemple: In Brazil exist a service called "Conectividade Social". It use a socket in port 80. Without transparent proxy this test (TELNET 200.201.174.207 80) show this:

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
HTTP/1.0 200 OK
Content-Type: text/html
Pragma: no-cache

PrivateWire GateWay

PrivateWire GateWay

User is not Authorized.

Please contact your organization for further information.

254

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If this happen, the service is working.

But if I enable transparent proxy on port 80 the test (TELNET 200.201.174.207 80) is get by Squid

I put a rule above all my "clients" of WISP

SOURCE RANGE OF MY NETWORK | DESTINATION 200.201.174.207 PORT 80

And this problem not happen anymore. But if Andrew implement a modification in Port Mapping Redirect to select excluded destination IP`S that not affected by Port Redirect.

Sorry my english...

Thanks !

Hi , I am using v2.8 of bandwidth manager and have encountered a problem with restricting traffic. I wish to restrict traffic from my server on one of three NICS to simulate a WAN connection for testign purposes.

I have added the rule and chosen 2000000 bps (2mbps) for outbound traffic of all types and this is reflected correctly in the rules list. However the rule doesn;t seem to do anything. I have succesfully streamed over 10mbps from the NIC. The bandwidth usage graph also does not reflect how much traffic is actually streaming outbound and is reflecting only between 20 or 200 kbps even though i know for a fact that over 10mbps is getting succesfully transmitted.
my three NICS are as follows
1 - 192.168.0.1 - 255.255.255.0
2 - 192.168.1.1 - 255.255.255.0
3 - 192.168.100.253 - 255.255.255.0
it is NIC 3 that i am trying to restrict the bandwidth consumption of.

I have tried the restrictions for both directions as well as outbound only but still no joy. I have used the program succesfully to restrict incoming traffic on another PC, but in this case it is the outbound that is more important to me.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Many Thanks

The only way to specify ports and/or protocols is to define a separate rule. For example, you may want to define a rule that applies to the HTTP and FTP protocols and penalizes their overuse.
btw: what ever happened to the dynamic allocation that was mentioned a ways back? for instance instead of set numerals assigned to rules, a percentage would be given of the total pipe.
This feature is not available yet. Perhaps in newer versions of BWM it will be implemented.

Sorry, I am not sure about items 1 to 10, are you asking how to create rules to achieve these objectives or have already made them? If the former, I could give advice:
1. There must be no restriction in bandwidth within the local area network (192.168.XXX.XXX).
Create a rule like this (the first in the ruleset):
Direction: Both
Protocol: Any IP based
Source: 192.168.0.0 - 192.168.255.255
Destination: 192.168.0.0 - 192.168.255.255
Rate: Unlimited
Interface: LAN switch

2. The mail server access should not be limited to any bandwidth (Public IP 123.12.34.56)
Create a rule like this (the second in the ruleset):
Direction: Both
Protocol: Any IP based
Source: 192.168.0.0 - 192.168.255.255
Destination: 123.12.34.56
Rate: Unlimited
Interface: LAN switch

3. We must prioritize the use of VoIP (Skype, Net2Phone, etc.) within its assigned bandwidth.
BWM currently does not support VoIP prioritization.
Direction: Both
Protocol: Any IP based
Source: 192.168.0.0 - 192.168.255.255
Destination: 123.12.34.56
Rate: Unlimited
Interface: LAN switch

4. It should give a very low priority and within the bandwidth assigned to P2P applications (Ares, eMule, Kazaa, etc).
You can create a single rule for all P2P users, so they will share a small limit:
Direction: Both
Protocol: P2P
Source: 192.168.0.0 - 192.168.255.255
Destination: Any
Rate: 50 KB/s
Interface: LAN switch

5. Each customer has a bandwidth (128, 256 or 512 download with its respective bandwidth upload) and assigned a static IP number (192.168.XXX.XXX) or a range (192,168. XXX.XXX - 192.168.XXX.YYY).
Since you want to have different rates for upload and download, you will need to create two rules per customer like this (note that direction is different and source & destination are swapped):
Download
Direction: Out
Protocol: Any IP based
Source: Any
Destination: 192.168.X.Y
Rate: 512K
Interface: LAN switch

Upload
Direction: In
Protocol: Any IP based
Source: 192.168.X.Y
Destination: Any
Rate: 128K
Interface: LAN switch

6. A group AAA (IP range 192.168.0.10 - 60) has unlimited access to the Internet.
Create a rule like this:
Direction: Both
Protocol: Any IP based
Source: 192.168.0.10 - 192.168.0.60
Destination: Any
Rate: Unlimited
Interface: LAN switch

7. How should rules and groups setup? Users should look like this: 1603 - 128Kb (128 download; 33.6 upload), 2901 - 512Kb; 502 - 128Kb; 701 - 256 Kb; 303 - 256 Kbetc;
You probably do not need to use groups (I mean BWM's MAC & IP address groups). Simply create a rule per customer to cover the necessary range as per question 5. If a customer may have more than one IP address, specify an IP range rather than an individual IP address.
8. Should MAC address give a better control so that no one change his IP to get a better bandwidth?
Depends. Firstly, you may have to deal with duplicate MAC addresses (where more than one computer has the same MAC address). Secondly, modern NICs allow to change their MAC address by a end user, which essentially makes no difference as both IP and MAC addresses can be forged.
9. The BWM Share Server is configured with XPīs Internet Connection Sharing. Should the BWM Bridge set ON? Which of both gives a better performance and control?
This depends whether you hit the limit of the number of simultaneous connections imposed by the ICS service. If so, you may want to use RRAS, but you will need to install a server edition of Windows. Or you can use bridging, but in this case your modem has to be a router or be able to route traffic and do NAT. There is no real difference in performance between either of them.
10. All other PCs and/or IP donīt have access to the Internet.
Create the following rule (at the end of the ruleset):
Direction: Both
Protocol: Any IP based
Source: 192.168.0.0 - 192.168.255.255
Destination: Any
Rate: Blocked
Interface: LAN switch

1. If we would have a second line of ADSL, BWM makes a channel balance? Access to any of the lines is assigned, default, automatic, balanced?
No, it does not make any balancing. You will need to use third-party software, or you can simply tune the server's or modem's routing tables so half of your customers (say those below 192.168.15.255) goes via one ADSL line, and another half goes via the second ADSL line.
2. It is possible to monitor the records from another PC outside the network, over the Internet?
If you mean accessing the BWM software remotely - yes. The BWM GUI talks to the core via a HTTP based protocol via port 8701. Provided that, you make all the necessary settings like port forwarding in your modem, you can control BWM remotely.
3. Can the BWM recognize PC's MAC that are within a Access Point device (Wireless)?
It's hard to say. BWM sees MAC addresses as they come within the wire. Most likely all PCs behind the access point (i.e. wireless PCs) will be visible as a single MAC address, so you will have to enforce bandwidth restrictions based on their IP addresses.
