Filter Examples

SoftPerfect Traffic Meter monitors network traffic using specific rules called filters. Here are filter examples to help you quickly learn the program.

To create a new filter, select from the main menu Filters - Add a Filter. To edit or delete a filter, use Edit Filter or Delete Filter.

Example 1. Monitoring traffic outgoing from your computer

Task: You want to monitor traffic originating from your computer to the Internet. Your computer is connected to a LAN (local area network) through which access to the Internet is provided (without using a proxy, but using NAT and actual IP addresses).

Solution: Create a filter that monitors the traffic between your computer’s IP address and all other addresses excluding your LAN so your local traffic is not monitored. The filter can look like this (the addresses from 192.168.8.1 to 192.168.11.254 are within your local area network):

Example 2. Monitoring traffic outgoing from your computer through a proxy server

Task: Monitoring traffic to the Internet from your computer, which is connected through a LAN (or in any other way) to a proxy that provides Internet access.

Solution: Create a filter that monitors traffic between your computer’s IP address and the IP and port of the proxy server. Such a filter can look like this (the proxy is 192.168.0.1:3128 in the example):

Example 3. Monitoring the amount of each user's traffic through a proxy server

Task: You have a local area network and its users have access to the Internet via a proxy server. You would like to know how much traffic is created by each user.

Solution: Create a filter for each user that monitors the traffic between each user’s IP address and the IP address:port of the proxy server. Such a filter can look like this (the proxy in this example is 192.168.0.1:3128 and the users are 192.168.0.2 and 192.168.0.3, etc).
