How does NetScan detect hidden shares?   29 March 2006, 11:46

Hello all,

I'd love to know how software like SoftPerfect's NetScan and Nessus detect hidden shares on Windows machines?

Any info (both technical and non) would be highly welcomed!

There is nothing special. A Windows server always provides client with all available shared folders (both public and hidden). That is filtering is done on the client. Hence we are able to bypass it and get all the available shares. That's what the NetShareEnum API call does.

Sometimes you can get the answer faster if you try the forum search and/or have a look at the software user manual to see if your question has already been answered.
