100GB RAM disk failing at boot

100GB RAM disk failing at boot   07 October 2014, 22:40

Hello,

I have created a 100 GB image on my SSD that is selected to load at start-up. For some reason it does not load automatically, works fine manually. This process takes up to 6 minutes, could i be hitting one of your static timeouts? Could you please investigate? I would like to use this ram drive for all user profiles, programs, etc.

How much RAM does this system have (and what OS)?

Re: 100G RAM Disk at Boot Failing   08 October 2014, 10:18

140GB of RAM and Windows 2012 R2

I have done some more testing to hopefully help workout here the issue is.

- Issue still occurs if not loading or saving to disk
- 64000MB ram drive issue occurs
- 32000MB ram drive works on boot

Thank you, we have been able to reproduce the issue, though the reason is yet unclear. A 100 GB RAM disk seems to be created fine, but 150 GB does not.

The tests that you have done with 32 GB and 64 GB, were they with an associated image file?
If so, could you please also try creating a RAM disk of the same size, but without an image (and then go up in size until they start failing to mount at boot)?

Re: 100G RAM Disk at Boot Failing   08 October 2014, 11:48

No disk image attached to the 64GB or 32GB test.

Please see the below test outcomes. Hopefully this should be small enough ram disk size for quick tests.

1)
30GB - worked
40GB - failed
30GB on disk - failed
2)
40GB - failed
30GB on disk - worked
3)
40GB - failed
4)
35GB - worked

Andrew,

Please let me know if you need any more information. 40GB is quite a low limit for the issue to occur, hopefully this should allow for quick diagnostics.

We have been able to reproduce this issue and no further information is needed at this stage. So far it looks like the problem is caused by the time it takes to allocate a large RAM block (not the size of the disk). Perhaps the kernel cancels the RAM disk creation and continues to boot after a timeout. We need some time to add logging and see when and how this happens.

OK, great. Please let me know if you need any any testing done with any dev build.

Any progress?
Thanks in advance.

Andrew, do you think this is going to be a hard issue to resolve?

I can imagine it being hard to solve, mainly because he would need a system which allows him a 100 GB Ramdisk.

Sorry guys, we are still working on it. Please allow us 2-3 more days and we will provide more information on this and a fix.

So far it seems that not all physical memory is available at the boot stage when a RAM disk is created. We're trying to find another way to allocate physical memory for large RAM disks to work. Stay tuned smile

No, sorry. Still haven't found a good way to allocate this much memory on startup sad
