How to get a RAM disk that mounts on-demand   03 February 2022, 11:12

Hello,

Is there a way to have a RAM disk mount on-demand instead of on boot or on logon?

I have a disk that I only need sometimes for high performance IO, but don't always want the memory to be taken up from other applications.

Thank you,
Michael

Each RAM disk remembers its last state. So if you mounted it, it will be re-created on the next boot or login. If you unmounted it, it will stay unmounted on the next boot or login. Therefore, if you think that you aren't likely to need a RAM disk next time, simply unmount it before logging off or shutting your computer down.

Alternatively, you could use the console version ramdiskc.exe to create and delete disks as needed on demand.
