Automatic start of applications is disabled with UAC mode 0

Started by Klaus

Hello Softperfect Team,

The RAMdisk menu item Tools-Applications is used for automatically starting external programs after RAM disks are mounted.

If I switch Windows10 to the UAC mode=0, this menu item is grey and can't be selected. Also the autorun/filename line in the ramdisk.xml file is ignored. Autostart is no longer possible in the UAC mode=0.

UAC is the "user account control" and can be switched between 0 and 1 by the registry entry
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System\EnableLUA
0=ramdisk doesn't start the autostart, 1=ramdisk starts the autostart

How can I use the autorun feature with UAC mode=0?

Thank you in advance and best regards
Klaus

The behaviour you described was intentional: it was originally introduced as a security measure against privilege escalation. If a non-privileged user added an application to be run, it could later execute with administrative rights for an administrator, because the application list was shared across all users. To prevent that, in earlier versions of RAM Disk the autostart functionality was disabled when UAC was turned off.

We have since redesigned this system. Applications are now stored on a per-user basis, which removes the risk of privilege escalation. With this change, the functionality of Tools - Applications is fully available, including under administrator accounts.

You can download the latest build and try the new system.
