Can RAM Disk and RAM File System be used simultaneously?

Can RAM Disk and RAM File System be used simultaneously?   26 July 2026, 00:15

If I have a RAM Disk, can I also use RAM File System?
Do I need buy RAM File System license? Any discount?

I have the same questions. Apart from that, I'm still wondering if I should actually use RAM FS.
I use RAM Disk to send TEMP files, log files, browser cache, downloads etc to my RAM disk, which has always worked fine here. Browser cache is moved to my RAM disk with the help of your Cache Relocator tool; other files are sent to my RAM disks by using symbolic links.

What would be the advantage for me to switch to RAM FS? Should I perhaps just stick with RAM Disk, which has always done a good job here?

From a consumer's perspective, these two programs could easily be merged into one. When configuring RAM, the settings would default to the FS configuration, with checkboxes added to enable NTFS or exFAT support.

Releasing an entirely new application at this point strikes me as nothing more than an attempt to charge customers an extra fee.

RAM Disk and RAM File System can be used on the same computer at the same time. They are completely independent products and do not interact or interfere with each other.

They are also licensed separately. While the RAM File System UI was intentionally designed to look familiar for RAM Disk users, the two products share almost no code internally. They use completely different architectures. Each product is extremely complex and cardinally different. The suggestion that "two programs could easily be merged into one" and that it was "nothing more than an attempt to charge customers an extra" is unjust and incorrect.

The main advantage of RAM File System is performance. Its different architecture makes it noticeably faster under heavy workloads, described in more detail in the RAM Disk vs RAM File System article.
For basic everyday use like browser caches, TEMP files, and log files you are unlikely to see significant benefits by switching to RAM FS. If RAM Disk is already working well for you, there is no need to switch. RAM Disk is an excellent product and performs very well in its class.

We plan to email all existing RAM Disk customers with a 50% discount offer for RAM File System. If you'd like to use it sooner, simply drop us a line and we'll be happy to send you a discount link.

I own a lifetime license for Ramdisk. Is this 50% discount applicable to the one-year license or the lifetime license? Please send me the link so I can check.

I purchased the Ramdisk license on June 17, 2026. Is there any way to convert it to a File System license? The File System version better suits my needs.

We haven't finalised the details of the discount yet, including whether it will apply to one-year updates, unlimited updates, or both.

That said, we understand why it might feel like a missed opportunity for you to buy RAM Disk only to see RAM File System released shortly afterwards. We are most likely going to provide complimentary RAM File System licences to customers who bought RAM Disk within the last few months as a thank-you for their support.

In the meantime, please take full advantage of the totally free 30-day trial of the RAM File System.

I eagerly await the final decision and result. Thank you smile

Thanks for your detailed replies, Andrew. Now I know RAM Disk and RAM File System can be used on the same computer at the same time, but would this bring any benefits to my SSD, or is it more than enough to run either RAM Disk or RAM FS?

There is generally no need to run both RAM Disk and RAM FS, as they provide the same kind of service: ultra-fast storage in memory (although RAM FS is the faster of the two). It is just an option for those users who do need both those apps.

In most cases, you can simply choose one or the other, as outlined in our guide: RAM Disk vs RAM File System: which should you choose?

The main reason to install both would be if you wanted to compare or benchmark them. Otherwise, either one is perfectly sufficient.

Again, thank you very much for your reply. Much appreciated. I will probably stick with RAM Disk for the time being, but I will probably also give RAM FS a try, just to see what it is like.
