Memory reclamation speed in SoftPerfect RAM Disk

Memory reclamation speed in SoftPerfect RAM Disk   31 August 2026, 17:52

I'm currently using SoftPerfect RAM Disk and the overall experience is very good. There is one "issue" I've run into though, and I wonder whether it could be improved in a future update.

I used a different RAM disk product before, which was good in every respect, so I have something to compare against, and it feels like with SoftPerfect RAM Disk the space is reclaimed rather slowly after files are deleted from the RAM disk. I wonder whether this could be improved a little. In SoftPerfect RAM File System it's already done very well, the memory is released promptly.

Just a small suggestion. I hope your software keeps getting better!

Good news: in RAM Disk version 26.7 we shortened the reclaim delay considerably. Memory freed by deleting files now comes back within about 10 to 15 seconds on NTFS, where previously it took around 70 seconds. On exFAT it takes a little longer, roughly half a minute, because Windows does not report deleted blocks through TRIM on an exFAT volume, so the driver scans the allocation bitmap itself and confirms a block is really free before releasing it.

That is also why RAM File System feels instant in comparison: it is a real file system driver rather than a virtual disk, so it knows a file is gone the moment you delete it, and hands the memory back the same second. No TRIM, nothing to wait for.

If you are already on v26.7 or later and still see a long delay, check that your disk uses dynamic allocation with Automatically release memory (TRIM) ticked. A fixed size disk holds its full allocation for as long as it exists, so nothing is ever returned.
