Limit sending emails (SMTP)   20 May 2006, 07:00

I am testing the Bandwidth Manager product to see if I can limit the sending of outbound e-mail. I want to throttle the amount of bandwidth my e-mail server can use to send outbound email messages.

I would like to configure my network as follows:

ISP<->Firewall(192.168.1.1 on LAN side)<->BM PC with 2 nics doing bridging (192.168.1.3 on ISP card 192.168.1.5 on LAN card)<-> LAN

What rule would I want to put into place to limit SMTP (port 25) traffic going out of my network to 512kbs?

The rule can be as follows (I assume your network range is 192.168.1.6 - 192.168.1.254):
Rule: SMTP Limit
 Protocol: TCP
 Direction: In
 Rate: 512000 Bits/sec
 Source: 192.168.1.6 - 192.168.1.254
Destination: Any IP address : port 25
Interface: LAN (which points to the local network)
