Internet Connection Sharing doesn't work   17 February 2017, 21:52

Back in a day I used to have XP and I never had a problem with Internet Connection Sharing (ICS). Actually I installed your software for couple of clients.

Now I am having one heck of a time with Windows 7. I am trying to share WiFi connection and share among few computers using LAN. Your software installed fine and worked one day. Then all of a sudden it won't. I believe it is due to Windows 7. Or is it because of my hardware? Once the ICS starts working well, I will be able to enjoy your software again. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Please be a bit more specific about "it doesn't work". Does this mean it doesn't start? Or crashes? Or shows an error message?

What about the ICS alone, without the Bandwidth Manager?

Thanks for your reply. Here is the ipconfig details in the Atom computer where I've installed BWM software. I have shared the WiFi connection and hooked the LAN connection to the 8 port switch.

Wireless LAN adapter Wireless Network Connection:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
Link-local IPv6 Address . . . . . : fe80::5024:a225:a676:9144%12
IPv4 Address. . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.100.8
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : fe80::fa98:b9ff:feee:8c74%12
192.168.100.1

Ethernet adapter Ethernet:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
Link-local IPv6 Address . . . . . : fe80::ac47:96f7:15cd:15a4%11
IPv4 Address. . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.137.1
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . :

I can ping 192.168.137.62 (the other computer connected via LAN cable from switch) fine. But from the other computer I cannot ping 192.168.137.1. Neither does it ping to google.com. Yet on BWM software I see data activity. Other computer is using Windows 10 and server computer is using Windows 7.

Something is not set up right. Any ideas? Thanks again.

I'd say this can be virtually anything from a firewall to a blocking rule in the Bandwidth Manager.

For a start, it is a good idea to disable any firewalls, including the built-in Windows firewall and disable all rules the Bandwidth Manager.
If that doesn't help, you would need a tool like Wireshark to trace what's happening there, in particular when you ping 192.168.137.1 from 192.168.137.62:
  1. Whether 192.168.137.1 receives and responds to an ARP request from 192.168.137.62
  2. Whether 192.168.137.1 receives and responds to an ICMP request from 192.168.137.62

Now we are going somewhere. I disabled firewall on the server computer. Immediately after that the client computer was able to ping 192.168.137.1. From the client computer, I pinged www.google.com yet it doesn't work. I got the message "Server DNS could not be found". Someone told me to manually put DNS in server computer as 208.67.222.222 for ethernet part. I did that and still same thing. Funny thing is from client computer, I am able to ping opendns IP!!

This all tells me that something is still blocking the traffic to pass through the ICS. I never had this type of issues when I was using XP. BTW, I tried this by exiting BWM software as well.

Thanks again.

Check the DNS settings on the client computer (192.168.137.62) - it needs to be set to a working DNS server, e.g. your router's IP address 192.168.100.1 or Google's public DNS 8.8.8.8.

Setting DNS settings on the server computer and its Ethernet NIC would have no effect as the issue is that the client doesn't have correct DNS information, not the server.
