Limiting internet speed for one user with BM v3.5   03 February 2006, 03:21

We want to limit just internet access speed for one user but not LAN speed for this user.

When we said internet access we mean all internet protocols for all download/upload types (P2P, http, ftp, streaming, ...)

His PC IP and MAC addresses are:
IP: 10.195.190.21
MAC: 00-11-5b-be-24-50

Until now we've created just this rule:
GENERAL: Direction: Both, Rate: 20 KB/s, Protocol: Any, Interface: Any
SOURCE: IP: 10.195.190.21, Port: Any
DESTINATION: IP: Any, Port: Any

.. but some hours after Rule have been applyed Internet access is down for every users. I suppose rule was not created correctly then we've changed rule to:
GENERAL: Direction: Both, Rate: 20 KB/s, Protocol: Any, Interface: Any
SOURCE: MAC: 00115bbe2450, Port: Any
DESTINATION: Localhost, Port: Any

We appreciate your help to clear next points:
1. What was original rule doing?
2. Was rule modify correctly? (or how should we define correctly the rule?)
3. What is most efficient to use for Source Address: IP or MAC ?
4. What type of Source Address (IP or MAC) is most recommended for PCs with Firewall enabled (by example: WXP+SP2 built firewall) ?

Thanks in advance.

1. It was doing exactly what you configured. Shaping any connections from/to 10.195.190.21 at the rate of 20 KB/s.

2. Yes, it was.

3. No difference, but if your LAN addresses are allocated with a DHCP server, MACs are better.

4. No difference. Both addresses are in the sampe packet. However, an IP address can be easily changed by the user or DHCP protocol while MAC addresses are permanent.

Sometimes you can get the answer faster if you try the forum search and/or have a look at the software user manual to see if your question has already been answered.
