Can't Access router after successful set up   14 May 2010, 06:20

Hi. I have downloaded and installed the Bandwidth Manager. My setup is
Modem - Router - (Internet) NIC - Server (Bandwidth Manager) - (Lan Side) NIC - Network Switch -LAN PC's
I have set up the bridging, all the rules and other stuff and they seem to be working. My problem is I lost the ability to access my router web GUI from my local PC. I even tried it on the Server PC. I can't even ping it anymore. But everything on the LAN side is working fine. I can access the internet. Am I missing something. Do I need to map a port or something?
Thanks in advance...

This is most likely a routing or IP configuration issue. Please provide a complete output of ipconfig /all launched at a command prompt on the server.

1. Remove the default gateway and the DNS server from the Local Area Connection. These fields must be left blank.

However, the bridge may still be unable to access the Internet and/or the LAN as both the NICs are assigned IP addresses belonging to the same subnet. This is basically a routing issue. The bridge has got two NICs assigned 192.168.1.248 and 192.168.1.249. Suppose you want the bridge to connect to 192.168.1.250. The question is which NIC should Windows choose to reach this address as it does not know which side it is hooked up to. Thereby you need to give Windows a hint using the route command and adjust the metrics.

2. Go to each NIC's Advanced TCP/IP Settings and assign a metric manually. A metric is merely a number representing the cost of the route. You need to assign a higher metric to Internet. For example, you can assign 100 to Internet and 50 to Local Area Connection. This will make Windows think the route through the latter is "cheaper" and it will route local traffic via this NIC properly. However, this will also break the Internet connection. In order to fix it, you need to execute the following commands at a command prompt:

3. Launch this command:
route -p add 192.168.1.250 mask 255.255.255.255 192.168.1.249
route -p add 192.168.1.1 mask 255.255.255.255 192.168.1.249
This tells Windows: access 192.168.1.250 and 192.168.1.1 via the NIC assigned 192.168.1.249. So in this case Windows will access the Internet through gateway 192.168.1.250 via Internet due to this explicit routing record, and all remaining local addresses via Local Area Connection.

I have done 1 & 2 but can't do 3.
I was getting an error:
The route addition failed: The parameter is incorrect.

I have done 1 & 2 but the internet and all rules is still working which is good, I think...
For the metric, I clicked on TCP/IP/advanced/unchecked automatic metric/put 100 for the internet & 50 for LAN.
Is that correct?
I still can't connect to the router.
Thanks for your help Andrew...

Yes, the metrics are set correctly. As to altering the routing table, please provide a complete output of route print launched at a command prompt.

Can't Access router after successful set up   16 May 2010, 11:19

For some reasons there have been two conflicting records created:
Persistent Routes:
Network Address Netmask Gateway Address Metric
192.168.1.250 255.255.255.255 192.168.1.249 1
192.168.1.1 255.255.255.255 192.168.1.249 1
192.168.1.250 255.255.255.255 192.168.1.249 100
192.168.1.249 255.255.255.255 192.168.1.250 1
192.168.1.249 255.255.255.255 192.168.1.1 1
Try to drop them and re-create:
route delete 192.168.1.250
route add 192.168.1.250 mask 255.255.255.255 192.168.1.249 metric 1 if 2
If it still doesn't work, try to reboot the server.

Thanks Andrew...
I was able to access the router on the server side but still not on the LAN side. I also lost internet on the server. The LAN can access the internet, no problem. If I'm going to buy the software, will I be able to register the software if the server has no internet? I have done a route print again. Please take a look at the routing table...
