Monitoring host computer   26 July 2010, 00:05

Hi experts

We're using our Host server to manage the internet sharing, with BMW installed on it.
Our setting :
ADSL modem -> Host box -> LAN router -> computer(s)

We use the host box to browse the internet also, it adds little (very little actually) traffic to the overall traffic.

If possible, we would like to monitor that also.
For this case, how would I go about setting the rules?

kind regards
Ethan

It depends. If the host box does NAT or routing, then the answer is no. If the host box is merely a bridge, then yes, it's possible. You just need to create a rule watching traffic from the local host to any remote address via the Internet NIC.

Hi Andrew,

Thanks for the fast reply.

My host box is doing DHCP, and thus NAT i think... bad news for me
guess I'll have to calculate manually by subtracting the traffic sum with d clients' traffics smile

kind regards,
Ethan

DHCP and NAT are independent things. Try to create a rule watching traffic from local host to any IP address on the external NIC and see whether it registers all traffic or the host box's traffic only.

Sometimes you can get the answer faster if you try the forum search and/or have a look at the software user manual to see if your question has already been answered.

Our forum rules are simple:

  • Be polite.
