Excluding TV card traffic   24 November 2013, 00:07

My network has 2 Win 7 systems connected by ethernet to the modem/router. One system has an internal Ceton InfiniTV card which is listed in Device Manager as a network adapter and is also listed in the Networx drop-down listing of network adapters. The TV card receives a cable TV signal via coax wire from a 2 way splitter, with the other coax wire running from that splitter to my cable modem/router (which, of course, that system is plugged into).

If I run Networx monitoring All Connections, I believe it picks up cable TV signal data flowing into the TV card. I would prefer to monitor only internet usage and not the live TV data stream. So, I have been forced to run WinPCap, which allows Networx to monitor only my system's primary LAN adapter while ignoring local LAN traffic. But with this configuration, I am unable to use Networx's application monitoring feature.

If I install one of Networx's two LAN monitoring drivers and select the option to monitor the router or All Connections, it picks up the incoming signal to the TV card, which is not what I would like.

Am I correct in assuming that the incoming TV signal is NOT deemed by Networx to be local LAN traffic that can be ignored?

Is there any way to take advantage of Networx's application monitoring while monitoring only internet use and NOT monitoring the incoming cable TV signal? (There is virtually no local traffic between the 2 Win7 systems, although Networx is set to synchronize data for both.)

Generally NetWorx is supposed to ignore LAN traffic both when WinPCap is used and when its built-in driver is used.

Could you please post here complete output of the ipconfig /all command launched in command prompt, so I can see your adapter configuration?

Andrew, here is the ipconfig /all output. By the way, my Motorola SBG6580 combo cable modem/router does not allow user access to SNMP settings.

That's quite strange that NetWorx records the TV streaming data when you are using one of the built-in drivers and have the Ignore LAN Traffic option ticked.

Do you know any more details on how this Ceton InfiniTV Network Device receives TV data or where from?

If it's regular TCP/UDP traffic, it should be ignored by NetWorx just like any other local communications.

Also make sure you have all these IP address listed in the settings under the Setup button

Re: Question re: monitored adapters   27 November 2013, 00:15

I do have those exact settings in the IP Address Range Manager.

The Ceton TV card works by starting Windows Media Center. The cable TV signal comes in via coax cable direct to the TV card and not through the router or cable modem. I believe the Ceton diagnostic software shows quite a few TCP/UDP connections open when the TV card is on, perhaps as many as 50. I will try to verify, but I remember asking Ceton support why there were so many connections and they said it was normal.

I'm now running WinPCap, but I remember that with the Networx driver the only option that allowed ignoring local traffic was to monitor All Connections, which would capture the TV data. I will try again though to make sure I am correct on this.
