Extremely high data usage reports for some apps on macOS

I have noticed that there is a chance that NetWorx records a huge amount (300GB to 2TB) of phantom data usage, which is not real in the following situations:
1. Connecting/Disconnecting from a VPN (Unifi Teleport VPN with Ubiquiti WiFiMan iPad App).
2. Disconnecting Wi-Fi in the midst of a Facetime call (no VPN). Not sure if it has to do with Facetime or just disconnecting in general.

Going back through the logs, it seems like this started happening in September after I have updated the macOS to Sonoma. However, it is unclear if it is Sonoma-specific as I only started using Facetime and VPN on my Mac after updating to Sonoma.

We have identified the cause of the excessive usage figures forWiFiman and FaceTime. This issue has been resolved in the latest build. You will need to reset the usage data to remove the old incorrect figures.

Please note that there is a separate issue with VPNs. Since the WiFiman app functions as a VPN tunnel, whenever it is connected, its usage will be reported twice: once for the actual application sending and receiving data, and then again as if the WiFiman app itself sent and received that data. This occurs because, as a VPN app, it captures data from other apps and transmits it through a tunnel, leading to the double reporting of the same usage.

To prevent this from happening, you can exclude the app from monitoring. To do so, open the usage reports, select WiFimanPacketTunnel, and choose 'Exclude Application' in its context menu. After that, the data from this application will be excluded from the reports and graphs, which will provide more accurate usage information.

Just curious, what was the issue that caused NetWorx to record unrealistic amounts of data usage for these two apps, and what is the likelihood of it happening with other apps?

The erroneous readings for Facetime and WiFiman packet tunnel from before installing the fix still remain in my database and it is causing the totals to be really high. Is there a way to (hopefully automatically) delete any entries that are more than 10GB/hour for those 2 apps to get rid of all the erroneous readings?

Also, on a separate note, will using a VPN extension on Chrome cause double the actual data consumed to be recorded just like using the WiFiman Packet Tunnel?

We are glad to hear that the fix resolved your issue.

The incorrect reporting of usage figures for some processes was due to the peculiarities in how the newer macOS kernel handles UDP traffic statistics. This caused NetWorx misinterpret the data it received and record excessive usage. We've addressed this issue in the latest update, so it should no longer affect any app.

Regarding the erroneous readings for FaceTime and WiFiman Packet Tunnel: unfortunately, there isn't an automatic way to delete incorrect records selectively. However, you have two options:
  • Reset the entire usage database to start afresh.
  • Send us a backup of your usage database (go to Usage Reports - Backup, then compress it into a ZIP file), and we can manually remove those entries for you.

On the question of VPN extensions in Chrome: Chrome extensions are essentially HTML and scripts, so all usage would typically be attributed to Chrome. That said, the specifics can vary depending on how a particular VPN extension is implemented. It might be worth experimenting to confirm how it behaves correctly in your setup.
