Connection Monitor stays active while Mac sleeps

Started by Frank

Hi, and thank you for the nice NetWorx product. I have a business license.

Today I opened up the Connection Monitor and noticed that it had reported precisely 6 hours of downtime. My Mac was closed and asleep at night, as was I. The 6-hour downtime reported is probably because my Wi-Fi network is scheduled to be turned off between midnight and six in the morning.

From this, I'm suspecting that NetWorx is continuing to monitor the network while the Mac is asleep. If that is true, I would kindly ask for this to be changed. When I close my laptop, I expect nothing to happen until I open it again. And of course this helps with battery life.

It also results in a 1 star rating for my network today - which is inaccurate and muddies the result which makes it harder for me to spot real problems.

Hope this feedback helps improve the product!

Thanks and best regards,
Frank, from The Netherlands

Thank you for your kind words about NetWorx and for your valuable feedback.

You've raised an important point, and we'd like to clarify a few details to help us investigate further. As far as we are aware, during system sleep on a Mac, all processes (including NetWorx) should stop running. This means NetWorx should not be monitoring the network while your Mac is asleep.

To help us look into this, could you please let us know approximately what time your Mac went to sleep and what time it was awoken on the day in question? With that information, we will do our best to reproduce the issue and understand what might have occurred.
Thanks for the prompt reply.
I ran the following to help get you some data:
log show --style syslog --predicate 'eventMessage contains "Entering Sleep" OR eventMessage contains "Wake reason"' --last 2d | grep -E "Entering Sleep|Wake reason"
See [attached file]. Looks like my Mac was frequently active during its sleep?

Thank you for the logs. They were very helpful.

Indeed, it appears that your Mac was waking up frequently during the night, and with the Wi-Fi router turned off during those hours, NetWorx was understandably recording this as downtime. This behaviour seems to stem from macOS waking the system periodically, potentially for background tasks or due to its network hardware.

There is a relevant discussion on apple.com that outlines a couple of system settings that might help prevent these frequent wake-ups, such as
sudo pmset -a tcpkeepalive 0
sudo pmset -a powernap 0
Adjusting those settings could reduce or eliminate these unexpected wake events, leading to more accurate downtime reporting and better battery life.
