Re: How to get a RAM disk that mounts on-demand

2 years ago, by Ann in RAM Disk Forum

Each RAM disk remembers its last state. So if you mounted it, it will be re-created on the next boot or login. If you unmounted it, it will stay unmounted on the next boot or login. Therefore, if you think that you aren't likely to need a RAM disk next time, simply unmount it before logging off or shutting your computer down. Alternatively, you could use the console version ramdiskc.exe to crea

Re: How to identify the cause and fix NTFS errors

2 years ago, by Ann in RAM Disk Forum

Unfortunately it is really hard to tell what might be causing this. Since it's only the image-backed RAM disk that has this error, my best guess would be some data inconsistency because the RAM disk driver has to temporarily block writing to an image-backed RAM disk to write pending changes to the file. As a simple workaround I would recommend using exFAT instead of NTFS. It's generally faster

Re: Scanning and detecting devices in multiple subnets

2 years ago, by Ann in WiFi Guard Forum

It is not a product limitation, but rather how networks work in general. As you may know, WiFi Guard identifies network devices by their MAC address, so the known MAC addresses are whitelisted whereas an unknown MAC address will trigger an alert. However MAC addresses can only be resolved within the local subnet. The ARP protocol messages used to resolve MAC addresses are not forwarded between

Re: How to monitor the router and other devices connected to it

2 years ago, by Ann in NetWorx Forum

In your current setup where you have NetWorx installed on one of your desktop PCs, it is only monitoring bandwidth usage of that PC. The second PC and any other devices are not monitored. It is simply not possible to monitor all network devices from one PC. Selecting your router MAC address only restricts NetWorx to being active when you are connected to your home network. This feature is mainly f

Re: How to get all shared folders and their permissions

There is basic reporting in Network Scanner, for which you need to Enable security and user permission scan in Options - Shares tab. Additionally you can use the free ShareEnum utility from Microsoft.

Re: Recording usage graph over time

2 years ago, by Ann in NetWorx Forum

There is no usage graph overtime, but there are a couple of tools you may find useful: Scheduled speed testing in Speed meter. You can run speed tests every X minutes and record the results over a time period. Connection monitor. This will record connection dropouts over 1 minute (i.e. if the connection goes offline for longer than a minute).

Re: Network adapter ID

2 years ago, by Ann in Bandwidth Manager Forum

As mentioned earlier, the simplest way would be to add a new table to the database listing all available interfaces and their IDs. We use a custom hashing function for the ID and calculating it outside the software would be complicated. So if you download and install the latest build, you will see there is a new table ADAPTER that has all the information you need.

Re: Network adapter ID

2 years ago, by Ann in Bandwidth Manager Forum

We were unable to use interface index as it turned out that adapter indices can change between reboots or system upgrades. Instead we take the system adapter name (GUID) and compute a 32-bit hash value of it. The names and their hashes remain the same throughout the lifespan of the system. If you just need to know the mapping once off in a single system, the simplest way would be to create a

Re: Feature request: Ability to display the graph only

2 years ago, by Ann in NetGenius Forum

Thank you for the suggestion. We have added upload and download rates to the graph window. Update: the new version is now ready and can be downloaded from NetGenius product page.

Re: Feature request: Ability to display the graph only

You can now download and try the preliminary version. This is not the final release yet. We are still planning to add a global hotkey. If you have any comments or suggestions, please share them here.

Re: Empty disk shows as full in Windows 11

2 years ago, by Ann in RAM Disk Forum

In that case please try turning on either of these options: Hard-Disk Emulation. This will emulate an entire hard drive with partitions rather than a standalone volume. Some Windows features like Volume Shadow Copy require a hard disk drive; or Mount As Removable. This will let Windows know that the drive can be removed at any point and it should theoretically close handles and flush all files

Re: Empty disk shows as full in Windows 11

2 years ago, by Ann in RAM Disk Forum

RAM disk is merely a block storage, like a regular disk drive. I contains what the system puts there; no more, no less. If you have a full disk issue, it's something to do with the file system. Usually it's hidden files and folders that aren't shown in Windows Explorer. It could also be NTFS metadata that takes up the space. You could try using a tool like WinDirStat to find out what's taki

Re: RAM disk with enabled virtual memory (pagefile.sys)

2 years ago, by Ann in RAM Disk Forum

Adobe software products, including Photoshop, are unfortunately notorious for their peculiar memory usage and management. Therefore you may like to check your Photoshop settings. The exact procedure may vary, depending on your version of Photoshop, but generally go to Edit - Preferences - Performance and adjust the memory usage limits to something that would work better with your hardware. Also,

Re: Feature suggestion: Customisable sender for email alerts

2 years ago, by Ann in WiFi Guard Forum

Many SMTP servers do not allow specifying a non-existent or someone else's sender email address. Therefore, we have instead updated WiFi Guard, so that it would use the product name as sender for emails. This change comes with a simplified SMTP setup where you only need to provide the recipient address, and there is no need to enter the username and password. In WiFi Guard Settings, on the E-ma

Re: How to activate the licence key for all server users

2 years ago, by Ann in RAM Disk Forum

Most likely they licence key did not get applied because you entered it while another instance of RAM Disk was running. Then, when that user logged out, the shared configuration file was overwritten and the licence information was lost. Please ensure that only one copy of ramdisk.exe is running when you are entering the licence. Maybe run "taskkill /F /IM ramdisk.exe" first and then

Re: How to identify what is downloading in the background

2 years ago, by Ann in NetWorx Forum

We have the NetGenius tool, which can show specific applications and their connections in real-time and allow you to set a usage cap on them. It is offered as a free 30-day trial, so you can check easily it out and decide whether it helps with what yo wish to achieve. NetGenius will not show what apps are using the Host Process for downloading, but it will show where they are downloading from,

We don't use Log4j in any way, therefore none of our software products are affected by its vulnerabilities.

Re: How to suppress notification pop-up

2 years ago, by Ann in WiFi Guard Forum

The notification keeps popping up because you take no action, and thus the found devices remain unknown. Until you tell it, WiFi Guard has no way of knowing whether you recognise the discovered devices. So, to stop the notification from showing up unnecessarily, you should simply mark the discovered devices as known. Double-click each unknown (red) device and mark it as known if you recognise i

Re: Global setup for all users

2 years ago, by Ann in Connection Emulator Forum

Yes, it is possible to set a licence on the computer globally, and then run the software without a user login. Here is how: Create a REG file as described here, then import it in the registry. This will set your licence to a key under HKLM, and the Connection Emulator will launch as licensed for any user. Create an XML profile with your emulation settings, i.e. choose your settings in Connection

Re: Nox Android emulator hangs RAM Disk

2 years ago, by Ann in RAM Disk Forum

We were able to reproduce this issue with Nox Player, but the cause is unclear. It could be that Nox emulator consumes a lot of system resources, so creating a disk takes much longer. We noticed that once Nox emulator is stopped, the creation of a RAM disk finishes successfully. My advice would be to create your RAM disk before you start Nox emulator.

Re: Customised quota reset schedule

2 years ago, by Ann in Bandwidth Manager Forum

Unfortunately the Bandwidth Manager cannot be configured precisely as you describe. However, the rolling quota should act similarly. For example, for 3 hours rolling 100 MB: 08:00-08:59 User downloads 20 MB. 09:00-09:59 User downloads 30 MB. 10:00-10:59 User downloads 50 MB and gets blocked because all quota has been used up (20+30+50=100MB in the last 3 hours, from 8:00 to 10:59). 11:00 Qu

Re: "The parameter is incorrect" error

Big thanks to everyone for your reports! We are currently running the RAM Disk on numerous machines with different OS and with various settings in attempts to reproduce this error. So far, the error has not appeared, but we'll keep going until we catch it. If anyone notices a connection between this error and anything else (a certain setting, action, third party software, etc) please do let

Re: Customised quota reset schedule

2 years ago, by Ann in Bandwidth Manager Forum

Yes, you can use the current software version to set a certain quota for every X hours. For that, choose the hourly quota condition on the General tab and set the megabytes you wish to allow. Then go to the Advanced tab and set the Number of hours in the Additional parameters. For example, if you set 50 MB and 3 hours, it will function as a 3-hour rolling quota allowing no more than 50 MB wi

Re: How to run GPResult command

Re: Error when deleting a disk

2 years ago, by Ann in RAM Disk Forum

You seem to be adding the RAM disk with ramdisk.exe (GUI version) but deleting it with ramdiskc.exe (console version), and that's not a correct way to do it. If you simply need to create a disk, use it, and then delete it, please use ramdiskc.exe for every step. It's a console interface without user prompts designed to be used in scripts and automation for on-demand disks. Whereas ramdisk.e

Re: What is "Locally administered address"?

2 years ago, by Ann in WiFi Guard Forum

It is basically a MAC address set by a network administrator. MAC address can be either: Universally administered address (UAA), which is a unique address assigned to each physical device by the manufacturer. Locally administered address (LAA), which can be assigned to the device by a network administrator or by special software and override the UAA for that device. Universal address admini

Re: "The volume for a file has been externally altered" error - Resolved

2 years ago, by Ann in RAM Disk Forum

I am sorry to hear about the virus in your system. If mounting the image file at 4096 byte offset did not work, it is likely that the file system was damaged beyond repair. Especially if what you've got is a ransomware type of malware; they can encrypt parts of the file in an attempt to extort money.

Re: How to find out the number of streams

2 years ago, by Ann in Bandwidth Manager Forum

The number of streams is not really related to the number of connections passing Bandwidth Manager. It rather determines how many rules you can create and how many users can be tracked. There are two types of rules, depending on how their tracking mode is set: With the default setting, any connection within a rule shares the defined bandwidth limit. In this case, 1 rule = 1 stream. Simply determ

Re: "The parameter is incorrect" error

2 years ago, by Ann in RAM Disk Forum

Unfortunately it is hard to tell what is causing this, and it will require further investigation. It could be a Windows update, file system corruption, Visual Studio installation, or the changes in RAM Disk v4.3. For now, I would recommend trying a volatile RAM disk, i.e. a RAM disk without an image file attached. Since you are using the RAM disk for temporary compiler output, saving it between
