Re: How to configure shared folder permissions

3 years ago, by Ann in Network Scanner Forum

If you are running the Network Scanner as domain admin, you don't need to specify any account details. It will automatically assume your current user's context, and as a domain admin you should be able to access WMI on remote computers. It's all about WMI configuration in your network. It is not related to who is allowed to access a share. If you get WMI queries working on your network computer

Re: Licence purchase for different operating systems

3 years ago, by Ann in NetWorx Forum

If you want to purchase a licence, it is the same licence for all platforms. The "up to 5 devices" licence covers five devices. Each of those five devices can be running a different operating system (Windows, macOS, or Linux), and the same licence key will work with all of them.

Re: How to configure shared folder permissions

You will need to write a VBScript that extracts the list of shares, gets the security settings of each share, and then outputs that information. Below is a sample script for getting share security info. You may want to modify it further to suit your needs, then load it into NetScanner via Options - Remote Scripting and, if WMI access is enabled and configured, run the script against your device

To revert the renamed computer to its original name, simply use the Rename right-click menu again, but this time leave the name empty (do not enter anything).

Re: How to configure shared folder permissions

3 years ago, by Ann in Network Scanner Forum

In Windows, when NTFS permissions and shares are used together, the most restrictive permissions prevail. For example, if "Everyone's" NTFS permissions allow modifications while the share permissions only allow reading, the share permissions apply, because Read is more restrictive than Modify. It is possible to simplify things and work with just one set of permissions: the NTFS share per

Re: How to configure shared folder permissions

The lock icon suggests that access was denied when the scanner attempted to list the share's contents. As you are also getting the access denied error, please check that folder's NTFS permissions (locally on the server, on the Security tab in the folder's properties). The effective permissions are computed from NTFS and share permissions combined, so it it likely "Everyone" isn't allo

Re: Date or time since the last port state change

Yes, we have just added this feature. Please download the latest build, install it, and go to menu View - Columns - Last Change. This will add a column that displays how long ago the interface changed its state.

Re: Bandwidth monitoring in a workgroup

We don't use encryption in NetGenius. All settings and the access password are kept in a local database in C:\ProgramData\SoftPerfect\NetGenius. The password is Base-64 encoded. For added security in a corporate environment you may want to revoke the Users group access to this folder. No specific permissions are required to save the settings. I am not sure why in your case the GUI did not displ

The answers to your questions: Once the service has been installed, its default password is blank. You can then connect to the service from the main PC and set a new password. You can also connect to multiple services and set a new password at once. Simply selected all connected services in the user interface, then choose Settings and set a new password; and it will be set on all of them. There

Yes, there is. NetGenius should suit your requirements quite well. Simply install NetGenius service on every computer that you want to monitor, and you will be able to access all the reports from the main PC.

It sounds like you have a filter enabled. Perhaps, the current connections don't match the filter? The graph only shows what matched the filter and was processed rather than just forwarded.

Re: Scanning SMBv3 shares

SoftPerfect Network Scanner will use whatever SMB versions are installed and available in Windows. In recent builds of Windows 10 it usually means SMBv2 or SMBv3, as Microsoft is retiring SMBv1 due to its security vulnerabilities.

The macOS version is currently a separate product, and it does not have all the features available in the Windows version. The Windows version was created nearly 10 years earlier, and so its functionality is significantly more advanced. We are planning on adding new features to the macOS version in the future, but at any time the free trial for both Windows and macOS gives you an accurate repr

You don't need to be an admin user to use NetGenius. However, administrative privileges are required for its installation, because it needs to install a network driver.

Re: Loading programs from RAM disk

3 years ago, by Ann in RAM Disk Forum

It is usually possible, and you can try it if you wish, but it is likely that you will not see much improvement and may run into some issues. We have a Knowledge Base article about installing applications on a RAM disk, please have a look at it for more information. Though, with 32 GB RAM and the fact that you normally do not reboot your system, it looks like the relatively slow starting time o

Re: API for RAM Disk

3 years ago, by Ann in RAM Disk Forum

There isn't any API unfortunately, but there is a command-line support. Specifically, SoftPerfect RAM Disk has a console version (the ramdiskc file in its program folder), designed for use in batch files and scripts. You can simply execute the console command with the required arguments and analyse the exit code to see if it succeeded. This is what the console version looks like:

Re: How to display unlocked shared folders only

3 years ago, by Ann in Network Scanner Forum

It sounds like you are using an old version of Network Scanner. In the latest version, it is possible to filter out the share types you want via View - Quick Host Filter - Shared Folders in the main menu. This way you can have only common (unprotected) shared folders displayed. After that, you can save the filtered results to a file, and only those shares will be included. 1. All discovered

Re: How to set the source port

3 years ago, by Ann in Bandwidth Manager Forum

Simply choose IPv4 TCP/UDP under the protocol section on the General tab. The concept of ports is only valid for transport protocols such as TCP and UDP. If the rule is configured to capture some other protocol(s), it will not let you choose ports, just as you describe.

Re: HTTPS redirects

3 years ago, by Ann in Bandwidth Manager Forum

There is a solution, but it may not work the way you would wish it to. As you may be aware, HTTPS requires the domain certificate and the domain itself to match. For example, a user opens https://www.facebook.com, but since we don't have Facebook's private key, we will need to present a self-signed certificate. Many browsers will not allow users to proceed past this point due to security violat

Re: How to add a program to autorun in Server 2019 Core

3 years ago, by Ann in RAM Disk Forum

Thank you, we'll test it once again with Windows Core and perhaps add a way to enter file names directly. In the meantime, you can simply add an application to be launched directly in the config file. For that, open C:\ProgramData\SoftPerfect\RAM Disk\ramdisk.xml and replace the autorun section with something like this: <autorun> <filename>C:\Path\To\My\App.exe</filename>

Re: Why some devices may not be picked up by scanning

3 years ago, by Ann in WiFi Guard Forum

Sometimes WiFi Guard may be unable to detect some devices connected to your network. In particular, mobile devices (like your Blackberry) that are in sleep mode most of the time. Wake, activate, or turn them on, and try rescanning the network again. Sometimes it takes a couple of scan rounds to detect everything. The IP addresses and MAC addresses you mentioned are the so-called multicast addre

Re: How to add a program to autorun in Server 2019 Core

3 years ago, by Ann in RAM Disk Forum

The reason your RAM disks were created is probably that you created a boot-time RAM Disk. This type of disk is created by the system driver, whether the GUI is launched or not. User applications are however launched by the GUI, which itself is started at logon by a registry entry in HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run. I am not sure whether Windows Server core processes this key.

Re: RAM disk volume label length on FAT32

3 years ago, by Ann in RAM Disk Forum

I can confirm that this is not a local issue: the label indeed gets trimmed to 8 characters, i.e. "My Ramdi" instead of "My Ramdisk". Unfortunately, it is not clear why the truncation happens in this case, as the file system structures written to the disk appear to be correct, and FAT32 file system limits volume names to 11 characters (while NTFS volume labels can be up to

Re: How to add a program to autorun in Server 2019 Core

3 years ago, by Ann in RAM Disk Forum

The Add button is supposed to open the standard file selection dialog. I guess it's not available in Windows Server core. Even if the Add button did work, it is likely that your file will not be launched. As you mentioned, you are using a custom shell, which means the RAM Disk GUI may not be launched by Windows and consequentially none of the configured applications will be launched. I would

Re: Setting up a transparent bridge

3 years ago, by Ann in Bandwidth Manager Forum

It is hard to tell how it will work in your network with multiple VLANs. The bridging simply switches two NICs to promiscuous mode and follows this procedure: When BM receives a packet on NIC 1, it checks the destination MAC address. If the MAC address belongs to NIC 1, the packet is forwarded to the stack. If it does not, the packet is transmitted unchanged via NIC 2. A similar thing happens

Re: How to stop "the app you're trying to install isn't a Microsoft-verified app" pop-up

"The app you're trying to install isn't a Microsoft-verified app" pop-up warning appears when a user downloads and tries to install an application from somewhere other than Microsoft Store. In Windows 10, Microsoft introduced a new setting that restricts users to installing applications exclusively from Microsoft Store. To get around this limitation, you can try one of the solutions belo

Re: How to resize and change colors of the tray graph

If you are referring to the graph in the notification area, next to the clock, like this: then to resize the graph, you may need to unlock your Windows taskbar first. Simply right-click an empty space on the taskbar and untick the Lock the taskbar menu item. Then resize the graph and lock the taskbar again. You can also turn the whole graph on and off by right-clicking the taskbar and choos
