Re: How to move multiple Chrome profiles to RAM disk

3 years ago, by Ann in RAM Disk Forum

We are using symbolic links, but that's not a great solution for multiple profiles (it would require multiple symbolic links). Instead just change your Chrome shortcut (i.e. in the Taskbar or Desktop or Start Menu) to launch chrome with the --disk-cache-dir command line parameter. Something like this, if R: is your RAM Disk: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.ex

Re: API for automated tests

There are a few command-line parameters: consim.exe If the Connection Emulator is launched with an XML file specified, it will load the specified configuration profile and begin emulation automatically. If the emulation is already running, it will load the specified file and continue with the new parameters. If the /runtime switch followed by a number of seconds is present, the emulation

Re: Reconnecting to the Internet after uninstallation

3 years ago, by Ann in Bandwidth Manager Forum

What you describe is not supposed to be happening. Bandwidth Manager does install a lightweight filter driver for traffic capture, but it should have been safely removed by the uninstaller. Something must have happened during uninstallation, for example some other software interfered with the normal process. Please check in the adapter properties in Windows settings if the filter is still insta

Re: How to block AnyDesk remote desktop

3 years ago, by Ann in Bandwidth Manager Forum

You can try blocking the entire net.anydesk.com domain. It may not work immediately, if the clients have cached DNS responses, but over a few hours it should get blocked. Below is a screen shot showing how doing so prevents AnyDesk from connecting to its servers:

Re: Separate usage statistics for each user

3 years ago, by Ann in NetWorx Forum

It's just how NetWorx works: it is unable to attribute individual usage to a specific user. When multiple users are logged on, it will simply use the name of the user who launched NetWorx first. I don't think there is any way to track bandwidth usage by the user name. You can probably use Wireshark to determine top IP addresses and then map them to user names, but I have not seen any ready-to-u

Re: How Speed Meter measures the speed

3 years ago, by Ann in NetWorx Forum

Please see this page explaining similarities and differences between NetWorx and NetGenius. If you like the description of NetGenius, please download its free 30-day trial. Each user has different requirements and expectations, so we strongly advise everyone to always take advantage of the free trials, to make sure you are happy with the software before purchasing a license.

Re: How to use Logarithmic Scale

3 years ago, by Ann in NetGenius Forum

It is great to hear that you like our NetGenius and find it helpful. Logarithmic scale is very useful for displaying data that spans a wide range on one chart. For example, if you have a very low upload traffic stream and a very high download stream, using a linear scale (equally-spaced values have equally-spaced marks, i.e. same space between 1 and 2, 999 and 1000) will make the upload va

Re: Shared folder permissions

3 years ago, by Ann in Network Scanner Forum

It is supposed to display who can access shared folders (not who is actively using them). This is done by reading NTFS permissions, reading shared folder permissions and then combining them to compute the effective permissions. Unfortunately it does not always work well; for example if NTFS permission reading fails for some reason, there would be no result shown. I recommend trying this free Sh

Re: Alias in XML export

3 years ago, by Ann in Switch Port Mapper Forum

Thank you for reporting this issue. It was actually a bug, as the alias is supposed to be present in both XML output and JSON output. We have just fixed that. Please download and install the new build and you should be able to see the alias field in XML.

Re: What does "Reconnect" do?

3 years ago, by Ann in NetGenius Forum

The Reconnect menu is for re-establishing connection with a remote computer manually when the connection fails. For example, when a remote computer has not connected to the network yet, NetGenius Console may be unable to connect to it during its startup. In this situation, the user can try to reconnect manually. Otherwise, NetGenius will re-try in 1 minute automatically.

Re: Accidentally removed computer

3 years ago, by Ann in NetGenius Forum

To prevent this from happening again, we will add a confirmation message for the computer removal in the next NetGenius release. To add the removed computer back to the list, simply click Connect to... button in NetGenius toolbar, then in the "Connect to computer" field type either localhost for the current machine, or the computer's name (and password, if it was set) for a remote co

Re: Tasklbar Extension font

Thank you for your feedback. We have added an option to choose the font. Simply download and install the latest build, click on the Extension, choose Font... and set any font you like.

Re: How to remove Taskbar Extension

3 years ago, by Ann in NetGenius Forum

There are two ways to remove the Taskbar Extension without reinstalling NetGenius: The easiest way is to hide it by right-clicking the taskbar, selecting Toolbars, and then unchecking NetGenius Extension. Windows Explorer will off-load the inactive Extension, and it will not be loaded in the future, unless you enable it again. If you are familiar with the Command Prompt, you can manually de-reg

Re: Captured throughput is lower than it should be

3 years ago, by Ann in NetGenius Forum

It looks like you are using an older version of NetWorx and have the Ignore LAN traffic option enabled in it. In this case NetWorx intercepts traffic before NetGenius, and the latter will show near to no activity, like you describe. Try updating NetWorx to the latest version (6.2.8). It uses a different filtering mechanism that should work better with NetGenius. If that does not help, try untic

Re: 3.5 GB RAM disk limit on 32 bit OS

3 years ago, by Ann in RAM Disk Forum

32-bit versions can only use up to about 3.5 GB for a RAM disk, because 32-bit OS are able to address a maximum of 4 GB of RAM in total. You will need a 64-bit OS to use all your available RAM.

Re: How Speed Meter measures the speed

3 years ago, by Ann in NetWorx Forum

We are using the same servers as SpeedTest.net does, though the testing procedure is a little different. I am afraid it's not really possible to say which one is right and which is wrong. Some tests report the maximum achieved speed, others report an averaged value... NetWorx can display both.

Re: How Speed Meter measures the speed

3 years ago, by Ann in NetWorx Forum

The Speed Meter works by uploading random data of known size to a nearby server. The transmitted data volume is divided by the time taken, thus calculating the upload speed. Likewise, the download speed is calculated when a file of a known size is downloaded from that server. Speed testing is not related to SNMP in any way.

Re: Feature suggestion: Block applications before they connect to the Internet

3 years ago, by Ann in NetGenius Forum

Thank you for your feedback. Advanced blocking is a great idea, and it was already in your to-do list. We are currently in the process of adding a way to block applications or entire folders. About enlarging the UI, could you please elaborate further? The UI is supposed to automatically scale to any resolution, plus you can resize the main window as well. Regarding removing NetGenius from s

Re: Connection Monitor settings

3 years ago, by Ann in NetWorx Forum

These are two parameters that affect Connection Monitor, they are located in the Hidden Options: Connection monitor timeout is a time period in seconds after which the connection monitor records an event in its log. Connection monitor retries is a number of consequent pings performed by the connection monitor. For example, if the timeout is set to 60s and the number of retries is set to 2, it w

Re: Missing web-site list

4 years ago, by Ann in NetWorx Forum

In version 6.2.8 we have removed IP address logging. The reasons for that include general low popularity of this feature, disk space considerations, and most importantly it was not compatible with CPU-efficient monitoring. This however has nothing to do with speed testing. You can still run your speed tests from the Speed Meter window, as you did before.

Re: Show fully qualified domain names (FQDN)

4 years ago, by Ann in NetGenius Forum

We have added HTTP support as well. If you download and install a fresh build, you should be able to see the correct host names (i.e. the real host names instead of the reverse-resolved domain names like Akamai) for both HTTP and HTTPS connections.

Re: Usage is not recorded while the user is logged off

4 years ago, by Ann in NetWorx Forum

It is simply because NetWorx runs like a regular application, which is closed when you log off. It's just the way it's been designed. If you want to keep recording your usage while you are logged out, I recommend NetGenius, our newer app. It is basically a modern and simplified reincarnation of NetWorx built from the ground up. It tracks your usage by application and runs as a service, so it wi

Re: Show fully qualified domain names (FQDN)

4 years ago, by Ann in NetGenius Forum

Yes, this feature is normally implemented by extracting the data from so-called SNI, or Server Name Indication. We have implemented SNI name extraction in the latest NetGenius build - you should be seeing names that are more meaningful than Akamai's. Please try the new build and let us know how it works for you. At the moment this will only work for HTTPS, not HTTP (we will add HTTP support

Re: Rules, quota and group load capacity

There is no hard limit on the number of entries; but the more you add, the slower everything will be. In extreme cases, you may see severe performance degradation, so it's better to test it thoroughly before deployment.

Re: How to use NetGenius on multiple devices

4 years ago, by Ann in NetGenius Forum

The multi-device capability is available in the trial version as well (there is no difference in functionality between the trial and licensed version, except that the free trial is limited to 30 days). Here is how you can use it: First of all, it is important to know that NetGenius consists of two components: Management Console and System Service. These components can communicate over your loca

Re: 0 ms Response Time and device discovery success rate

4 years ago, by Ann in Network Scanner Forum

1) Version 6.0.2 shows zero response time when the device was discovered via an ARP request (arping) rather than ICMP request (regular ping). The latest version measures this time, whereas the older version simply reports a zero. Longer response times are typical of mobile devices that are generally found in sleep mode. 2) Likewise, some devices may be in a sleep state, causing them to respond

Re: How to fix the "database is locked" error

4 years ago, by Ann in NetWorx Forum

It looks like the database file may be opened by another process, e.g. an antivirus/security product. It is hard to tell whether a re-install can prevent this from happening again, but it's worth trying the latest version. Installing the latest version over the existing one should keep your data unchanged, but, just to be sure, please back up C:\ProgramData\SoftPerfect\NetWorx. Note, it's Prog

Re: Multiple IP ranges get obscured on restart

4 years ago, by Ann in Network Scanner Forum

Thank you for reporting this issue and for the detailed description of how to reproduce it. It was very helpful! Although the exact cause of the glitch is unclear (most likely one of the quirks of the underlying library), we have added a simple workaround that resizes the inputs once the initialisation is completed. Please download the updated build and it should resolve the problem.
