Netgear CG3000V2 router monitoring via uPnP   23 May 2014, 16:47

Hi all,

Firstly many thanks for NetWorx and maintaining it with updates, it's a great application!

I've recently had to switch from an ADSL connection via an Billion 7800N (full SNMP support) to an Optus cable connection via an Optus-supplied Netgear CG3000V2 which appears to support monitoring via uPnP only.

All latest builds of Networx 5.3.1 exhibit the same behaviour in that
1) It finds the WANCommonIFC1 WAN interface only sporadically and
2) Even when found, actual stats / real time speed display via deskband toolbar are very hit and miss in terms of happening at all and only last for ~10-15 minutes per time.

Is there anything I can do to help further test this or anything further I can try?

Thanks,
John

We've found UPnP support in many routers is pretty unstable, but let's have a look what's happening in this case.

Please download one of these builds installer or portable and set it to monitor the router.

It will print debug messages in a console window, so please post what gets printed here, especially when monitoring stops.

Thanks Andrew. The debug build was the same in that it wouldn't detect the interface at all yesterday over multiple attempts but did so first go this afternoon after leaving it not running for many hours.

Speeds were then displayed OK for an hour or so until the console messages attached.

Ah, I have seen this before. This is what happens:

The router box maintains its DL/UL counters which NetWorx polls periodically. The UPnP standard prescribes the counters to be 32-bit unsigned integers. This means they continuously go up from 0 to 4 GB.

Your router however seems to have a bug in its firmware code and it uses signed integers, which turns the counters negative as soon as they reach 2 GB. As you can see in the error message, it mentions the inability to convert a negative number as the ui4 data type. That is because Windows expects a positive number here and it receives a negative one from the router.

So basically NetWorx stops monitoring it once 2 GB of data have passed through the router. After the next 2 GB of data is works again. Then it stops again and so on. I will check if we can somehow work around this.

Much appreciated!
