how can i set a rule for a wifi user on my network?

7 years ago, by along5664 in Bandwidth Manager Forum

Ok if the user is connecting to a wireless router, either via wireless or lan connection, he will show up at the hotspot as the mac of the wan side of the router. You would put in a rule for whatever ip address is assigned to the wan port of the router. You can't have users behind a router and shape them individually, as they will get a nat at the router, and show up as the ip/mac of the wan side

Share internet Connection Evenly

Here is what we do to handle this, we use the add batch option under rules. Create rules for a number of specific ip addresses in a range, the same range your dhcp server hands out. We also have a rule that limits bandwidth based on protocol used, ptp is an option. Then for your video/audio online streaming, you could have a rule that just limits any/any to a certain bandwidth. That would catch a

Max number of rules.

Thanks for the replies. I will run it up to around 800 and see how it goes.

Max number of rules

Anyone have a idea of what the max number of rules is before performance of the server starts to be affected? I currently have 700 rules and wondering if that may be too many for my server. My server is a dual proc windows 2003 with 4gb of ram...I am not seeing the memory nor the procs being overused, but wanted to see if what I have in in line..

How to setup rule for large subnet shaping

I wan to setup a server for backup bandwidth shaping, and it will be a large subnet. I would like to have a rule that would allow everyone on that subnet to get 2mb/s download and 384kb/s upload. Can I do that with 2 rules , or do I have to have rules for every ip in that subnet? Thanks so much for your help.

Shaping bandwidth to a particular web site

I have a large apartment complex and they all come through the bwm. Is there a way to set a rule to allow a certain amount of bandwidth to a particular web site, say vongo.com? I want them to get there, but not let them consume all our bandwidth.

Ok thanks for the quota tip. Let me ask you this. I want to setup a quota to allow 1mb/s download. I do not want to inforce any other restrictions or limits. This would be for my download rates for all users.I would do the same for upload rates set at 512kb/s. Do I just create the quota, and leave the amount set for 0 and the timeframe 1 day and no reduced rate? Thanks.

One more question, once I have these rules created, is there a way to make a change to a group of them all at one time? I may want to bump up the outbound limit on a sections of rules...

I have my dhcp subnet setup for 172.18.0.0/16. It is handing out several hundred addresses. I setup a rule that had group 172.18.200.1-172.18.202.254 set for 1 mb/s both ways. When I setup this rule and had several users connect, they did not get 1mb/s each, but it appears they were sharing 1mb/s total. My goal is to have a rule that give each ip address in a range 1mb/s. How do I set that up? Do

bwm and dns on clients

I have setup bwm on a windows xp machine, and have setup ics. I have my client test station set to point to the server for dns. It worked for a bit, but then quit working resolving dns. Once I pointed it to an external dns all is good to go. What does everyone do for dns? Do you point to an external dns server for clients, or do you set up an internal dns?
