How to display uptime over LAN   19 November 2016, 08:23

Hello people at SP,

I have just started testing Network Scanner as I am interested in retrieving the uptime of all the PCs connected to our LAN. This information did not appear in the dedicated column inside the software.

Could you please advise if there were any conditions that have not been met for making the uptime read by Network Scanner?

Many thanks!

There are generally two ways of obtaining uptime:
  1. By using Remote SNMP - Uptime. This method requests OID 1.3.6.1.2.1.1.3.0 (sysUpTimeInstance) from SNMP-compatible devices, which obviously requires the SNMP service to be up and running on those devices.
  2. By using Options - Workstation - Retrieve computer uptime. This method calls functions NetRemoteTOD and NetStatisticsGet to calculate the uptime. As far as I know these functions require file sharing to be turned on to work and possibly domain admin privileges.
Alternatively you can use WMI to query uptime in seconds:
SELECT SystemUpTime FROM Win32_PerfFormattedData_PerfOS_System
or query the performance counters
\System\System Up Time

I seen a network scanner that does uptime properly on PCs with no creds but I'm not into mentioning competitors here coz thas not bizmarkie cool. They say its comes directly from a "netbios" using boot date. Not sure which port. Its the only software I seen that can do it on all our PCs & servers except for ones completely locked down by windows firewall with no ports open

Actually, please do mention the competitor that is able to do that. Then we can figure out how it determines uptime and implement it ourselves wink

Yes, though I couldn't find where it reports a device's uptime? At best I was able to discover remote device's date and time, but not its uptime confused
