Is Network Scanner a security vulnerability?   07 September 2023, 20:24

Hi

I have been using an old free version of network scanner (6.1.6.0) for several years and think its an amazing product. However, the other day I received a sharp message from the IT-department, claiming that the program poses a serious security risk. Is it true that a hacker could use the program to get into our network? Is there any known backdoors in network scanner?

Thank you for reaching out to us and for the compliments to our Network Scanner. We are pleased to hear that you've found our product to be valuable over the years.

Regarding your concerns about the security implications raised by your IT department, I'd like to assure you that we take the security of our products very seriously. There are no backdoors, and we are not aware of any specific security risks associated with the version of the Network Scanner you are using. Our development team is committed to maintaining the highest standards of security, and we continuously update our software to address any potential vulnerabilities.

That said, it's important to understand the nature of any network scanner tool. While our software itself is designed to be secure, the act of scanning a network inherently exposes the configurations and potential vulnerabilities of that network. Therefore, it's not the Network Scanner itself that poses a risk, but rather how it is used and who is using it. If someone with malicious intent has access to your network and uses any network scanning tool—not just ours—they may be able to identify the vulnerabilities that already exist in your network. This is one of the reasons why the Network Scanner is popular with network administrators: to detect network vulnerabilities and problems, so that they get fixed before any malicious person can exploit them.

It's also worth mentioning that network scanning tools can be detected and monitored by IT departments, which could be why you received a message from them. However, the risks associated with having a network scanner installed on your system are not unique to our product, and can occur regardless of our software being installed on your network or not.

In short, Network Scanner is a tool intended to aid in making networks more secure, not less.

If your IT department has specific concerns, we are happy to engage in a dialogue with them to address any issues they may have.
