"On peak" usage settings 31 August 2013, 21:57 |
Hi, I started to use this program in order to monitor my ADSL usage and find a better telecom offer.
I have found a good offer but limited (full speed) to 1gb of daily net traffic from am 8.00 to 24.00, and full speed, no limits from am 00.00 to 08.00.
I saw that networx separates on peak/off peak usage but I was not able to understand to what "on peak" refers to; I also wondered if it is somehow possible to set "on peak" usage according to my needs, so to be able to monitor in which part of the day I mostly generate traffic and if I'm ok with above mentioned traffic limits.
Could you please help me?
Thanks in advance

Read the Help section for Advanced, it's quite clear.
The only part that's not covered is how you change things, but that's easy, just click a 'cell', it changes colours.
You can drag your cursor around and change many 'cells' very easily.
The window tells you the 'time-of-day' for a 'cell' simply by hovering your cursor so it's easy to find the 8am to midnight for your 'on peak' limited period. You'll want to change the midnight to 8am to 'off peak' then set your Quota to control on/off peak and put in a high quota for 'off' with the 1GB for the 'on peak' per day.
So, the naming of 'on' vs. 'off' really just means: 'this' or 'that' time period for use with quotas. You could reverse the periods and quotas and get the same results.
Get adventuresome and play around and learn by experience... it's fun.

Gerry,
If Networx is running you should always see totals by hour that it was running regardless of whether you've 'coloured' the hours.
1) shows the setup that I just did to show you how I set the colours on my system
2) shows the Hourly tab, note the total for today
3) shows the total for today, note the total for the day in this case is the same as the hourly period for today since I just logged in today at 04:23
@ Andrew:
It would help if there was a way to filter or sort by On/Off/Un by Day/Week/Month to get totals, for example Total On for the month which would address Gerry's need.

@ Andrew
I made the change re: 0:00 - 7:59 this morning @ 5:30, note in screenshot
4) History Changed
that all hours between 0:00 - 7:59 for all dates have now been 'coloured' green = Off Peak.
Since I hadn't used this before, I'd expected that the settings would apply to only the hours during which the sql records were being created, meaning, I only made the change today so there shouldn't be any 'green' for days previous to today. It would also be easier to "see" if the date format shown in the first column was "YYYY-MM-DD DDD" meaning "2014-01-19 Sun" if these ranges applied to only weekends (Sat & Sun).
A column could be added to the database to record the ON/Off/Un setting for the hourly period.
But a user would then be forced to wait for sufficient history to be accumulated to analyze the different usage periods On/Off/Un.
However, the current approach, to flag all days, past & present & future, between e.g. 0:00 - 7:59, could be useful if we could sort the list by: [On|Off|Un] / Year / Month / Day / Hour period (descending) and the On/Off/Un could be a temporary field used only for the report,
as follows, using only the Off example: (lead zeros inserted to align totals for easy viewing)

A filter that allowed selection of depth of detail so that the totals could be shown by:
