Downtime information in Connection Monitor   20 January 2024, 08:08

Connection Monitor is showing an uptime of 168+ hours, but there is no other data in the table. Is this only shown for downtime? The manual shows a screenshot that seems to imply it should give some periodic status.

The problem is, there is no way to tell if it is actually working or what it is doing and there are no configuration options to control its behavior. The only information on what it does is found in another forum post which says it pings 1.1.1.1, 8.8.8.8 and 9.9.9.9.

My questions:
How often are these hosts pinged?
Are all 3 hosts pinged at each interval?
Do all 3 have to fail before downtime is logged?

I very clearly had a connection problem. Browser would not load any pages and ping 8.8.8.8 from CMD prompt failed. However, Connection Monitor did not show any downtime. I am trying to figure out if this is because it was able to ping one of the other hosts, if the period of outage was too short, or if it just isn't working.

It would be very helpful to be able to configure the ping interval as well as the hosts to check.

First of all, here are the answers to your questions:
  1. The hosts are pinged in a loop approximately every 10 seconds.
  2. All three hosts (1.1.1.1, 8.8.8.8, and 9.9.9.9) are pinged at each interval.
  3. Downtime is logged if all three pings fail within a single round.

Regarding the issue where the Connection Monitor did not show any downtime despite your customer experiencing connection problems, it could be due to a couple of reasons:
  • The outage duration was too short: If the connection problem lasted less than the ping interval (10 seconds), it's possible the monitor didn't detect it.
  • The monitor was able to ping one of the other hosts: If the monitor successfully pinged one of the other hosts (1.1.1.1 or 9.9.9.9), it would not have logged downtime.

You can check more ping details by right-clicking a log entry and then selecting Details in the pop-up menu:

Alternatively, you can try PingInfoView utility that periodically pings a list of custom addresses. You can use both PingInfoView and NetWorx in parallel and then compare their output.
