How to use Multiline Display Mode for long strings

Please explain, or direct me to the manual entry, for using Multiline Display Mode for long strings.

Excellent question. The multiline setting simply breaks down long values and displays them over a few lines.
Example:
This topic is closed.
It has had no new posts for over a year, so the software versions it talks about may be out of date.
