Hidden columns still accessible to external applications

If one of the columns is hidden, its value is still available to be taken into account by a defined application. Sometimes it is desirable to hide some columns to make easier the management and finding of values through NS, but those hidden values are still needed. Is it possible to have some kind of per-column tick mark (option, config) to make that value hidden but accessible?
As far as I know a column value is available to external applications, whether that column is hidden or not. Are you seeing something different?
