Incorrect speed and data usage reporting when using VPN

Hello,

I've noticed that when using a VPN service (in this case, Mullvad), NetWorx reports incorrect data regarding the speed of current transfers and data usage. For example, instead of 600 Mbit/s, it measures 1200 Mbit/s, and the amount of data transferred is also doubled. I've configured the settings to exclude local network traffic. That's why I can't select any network adapters to monitor. Maybe that has something to do with it? Is there a way to correct this behavior?

Best regards,
Torsten

That doubling is the VPN itself being counted. With local traffic ignored, NetWorx measures per-application rather than per-adapter, which is also why the adapter selection is unavailable in that mode. Your browser or download client is counted once, and then Mullvad takes the same data, encrypts it and sends it through the tunnel, so it is counted a second time under the VPN's own process.

The fix is to tell NetWorx to leave the VPN process out:

  1. Right-click the NetWorx icon and choose Usage Report.
  2. Open the Applications tab.
  3. Find the Mullvad entry in the list. It should be easy to spot, as its total will be roughly equal to all your other applications combined.
  4. Right-click it and tick Exclude Application.

The entry will stay in the list, but its traffic will no longer go into the speed reading, the graph or the reports. The totals already recorded will be recalculated without it, so your existing figures should drop to about half straight away. This option requires NetWorx v7.1 or newer. If you don't see it in the right-click menu, please update NetWorx to the current version.

If the figures are still doubled after that, let us know which entries the Applications tab shows while the VPN is connected, and we'll take a closer look.
