Option for disabling automatic disk creation

Hi,

I am evaluating your RAM Disk software and have two questions.

  1. A simple feature, I was wondering if there is an option to not automatically mount a drive after reboot/startup? If there is none, then could I ask for one?
Some of my use cases are "don't remember mount after a reboot".
  2. A bit technical, it seems that you support (and test for yourself) using your RAM disk for compiling code, but I wonder if you have come across any edge cases where your RAM Disk software won't work, especially with C++ and performance-wise with 1QD random R/W?

Otherwise, the features seem to be solid and so does the performance.
Your NTFS implementation seems to be more stable than OSFMount, where they don't support weakly canonical paths unless you would go with the slower option down to half speed with the Physical drive emulation, instead of the faster Logical one. I'm glad that your software works in this case and still has the "full speed" implemented. (tu)

Thank you for the kind words about our RAM Disk. It's great to hear that the performance and NTFS implementation are working well for you.

Regarding your questions:

1. That's a good suggestion, and we've just added a Manual creation type for RAM disks. As the name suggests, these can be created and removed on demand and won't be mounted automatically at startup.

2. We haven't noticed any edge cases with random I/O. At its core, RAM Disk is simply block storage, so as long as the NTFS structures are correct, everything should work seamlessly. This is actually one of the trickier aspects of the implementation: due to Windows architecture, all file system structures need to be created in code since there's no method to format drives in the Windows kernel. I'm confident ours are correct, though.

We've also improved a few stability aspects and added the long-awaited dynamic allocation and TRIM support, as shown in the screenshot below. This update should be released some time in December.

That is amazing news and feedback Andrew!
Now I know my decision ;)

Regarding the Creation option - Manual, please alter the software, so that it isn't automatically mounted when added/created.

The manual creation mode essentially means the disk will need to be mounted manually after a restart, as it will not happen automatically. However you are right, not mounting it immediately after addition would be more consistent. We will fix that.
