Win8 slow restart with mounted ram drive   13 November 2013, 03:14

Hi,

Restarting the computer with a ram disk mounted takes significantly longer than first unmounting the ram disk and then restarting. Maybe the force unmount question (which isn't displayed on restart) delays the restart until it's max wait time?

Thanks,
Zohar

What are the exact settings are specified for the disk?
Is your disk based on an image file?
What type of RAM disk are you using (boot/logon)?
Also please specify OS version including the type (32- or 64-bit).

Could also be because of the hybrid shutdown, which in this case should be turned off.

Based on 8GB image.
Mounted on boot.
Win8.1 x64

Not removable.
No HD emulation.
Save contents to image - checked.

Hibernation disabled, virtual memory disabled, no hybrid shutdown (and I was referring to restart).

Hybrid shutdown applies to restart also (it's enabled by default in Windows 8). Most likely it's the cause of this slowdown.

Try shutdown /r to perform a full shutdown and see if Windows shuts down faster.

That can be it because it takes some time to dump disk data to image file.

Andrew: It says specifically that hybrid shutdown doesn't affect restart. Also, I said specifically that I disabled hibernation (and thus hybrid shutdown).

VD: Please read my initial post again. I have an SSD drive. When I dismount the image manually before restart, it takes couple of second. On the other hand, if I leave it be, restart time is increased by at least a minute.
