Installation

RAM FS includes a kernel-mode driver, so its setup requires administrator rights. No configuration is required at install time.

Windows

Run ramfs_setup.exe. It registers and starts the driver service, installs the management application and adds a shortcut.

Requirements

• Windows 10 or 11, or Windows Server 2019 to 2025.
• 64-bit, Intel, AMD or ARM64.
• Administrator rights, requested by the installer.

macOS

Open ramfs_macos.pkg and run the installer. It places the application in the Applications folder, installs a kernel extension and a background service, and adds the ramfsctl command line tool. macOS 12 or later is required; both Intel and Apple silicon processors are supported.

Because the driver is a kernel extension from an external developer (SoftPerfect), macOS blocks it the first time it tries to load. To approve it, open System Settings and look under Privacy & Security or under General → Login Items & Extensions, depending on the macOS version, then click Allow next to the message about system software from SoftPerfect and restart when prompted.

On Apple silicon Macs, kernel extensions are additionally not permitted under the default Full Security policy, so the first installation requires booting into recoveryOS and setting the security policy to Reduced Security. Licensing

The product runs as a fully-featured 30-day trial. To continue using it further, purchase a licence and add it via Help → Enter a Licence Key menu, or with ramfsctl license command; no reinstallation is required. The About window shows the current licence state. The same licence key covers both Windows and macOS.

Uninstallation

On Windows, remove RAM FS from the Apps list; if the driver is in use, the final removal completes after a restart. On macOS, open the Uninstall command supplied in the application folder, which removes the kernel extension, the background service and the application. Volumes exist only in memory, so nothing persists on disk except the image files that you saved yourself — they can be deleted like any ordinary files after the application was uninstalled.
