Re: What is a common share?

4 years ago, by Ann in Network Scanner Forum

A common share is a shared folder that is not one of the following types: Administrative share is a special hidden folder (like C$, D$, admin$), automatically created by Windows and used in network administration. Write accessible share is a folder that the current user can write into. Restricted share is a folder that the current user cannot access. Shared printer is a printer shared on the

Re: Setting to send an email when an unknown device is discovered

4 years ago, by Ann in WiFi Guard Forum

WiFi Guard already satisfies both your wishes: The device limit setting you are referring to merely sets how many devices are to be scanned simultaneously, i.e. in parallel. It is otherwise known as the number of threads, and is there to give users a choice of how much of their computer resources WFG can use. It does not restrict the total number of devices that can be discovered in your network

Re: Gray taskbar icon and no network activity

4 years ago, by Ann in NetWorx Forum

This indicates that the network adapter previously chosen for monitoring is no longer available. To solve the problem, simply right-click the notification area icon, go to Settings - Main tab, and choose the correct adapter in the Monitored Interfaces drop-down list: If that does not resolve the issue, click the Networks button in the same pane and there choose All Networks to be monito

Re: Best suitable product for analysing data usage of multiple devices

4 years ago, by Ann in NetGenius Forum

In a common home network it can be difficult to get a comprehensive picture of your data usage, as it often consists of vastly different devices (computers, phones, TVs, gaming consoles, set-top streaming boxes, home appliances, etc). Whether you choose NetGenius or NetWorx, you can only monitor data on the computers where the application is installed. For example, if you have a Windows PC, Mac

Re: NMAP column data lost after saving and loading from XML

4 years ago, by Ann in Network Scanner Forum

The issue where some columns don't show up on system B when you transfer the data from system A is caused by different config files used in each system. For example, when on system A the network scanner is configured to have columns C, D, E, F, G, H, while on system B it is configured to have only columns C, E, H. What you need is to have identical configurations on both systems. So, to solv

Re: Missing Taskbar overlay

4 years ago, by Ann in NetWorx Forum

The small window next to the clock (called a Desk Band and described at the bottom of the graph page in NetWorx manual) is still available. It is probably just hidden in your case, so please: Make sure Taskbar Integration is ticked when you are installing NetWorx; Enable it manually by right-clicking an empty area on the taskbar and choosing Toolbars - NetWorx Desk Band. Don't forget to unlock

Re: Nmap integration: output issues

4 years ago, by Ann in Network Scanner Forum

This suggests that there is an issue with Nmap itself. Try running Nmap from a command prompt to scan a device and see if it shows an error. Common errors are: Npcap not installed and/or run-time libraries missing.

Re: How to get only particular limited information in scan reports

4 years ago, by Ann in Network Scanner Forum

There is a number of ways to get such selective reports. For example, you could: Apply a filter by share type and export only the visible rows and these specific columns ; or Run an XPath query against the XML file with the data (in a third-party XML editor); or Save everything to HTML and post-process it in something like MS Excel.

Re: NMAP column data lost after saving and loading from XML

4 years ago, by Ann in Network Scanner Forum

Sorry we were unable to reproduce this issue. Please try with the latest version (7.2.6) and if the issue persist, provide more info, including your configuration file saved to an XML file. Regarding exporting data to MS Excel, simply save the data as a CSV file and then it should be opened by MS Excel perfectly well, with all the headers.

Re: How much RAM can be accessed by RAM Disk?

4 years ago, by Ann in RAM Disk Forum

We cannot say with absolute certainty as we don't have any hardware with so much RAM to test it on. I guess, the amount of RAMDisk-accessible memory would be same as Windows permits. The reason for that is that our RAM Disk is using Windows APIs for memory allocation, and if a particular Windows edition has a limit, the API will not let it use more than that. Having said that, I believe your in

Re: Network Bridge and LAN shaping

4 years ago, by Ann in Bandwidth Manager Forum

The reason Bandwidth Manager does not have any effect in this configuration is that the Windows Network Bridge forwards traffic at a lower level, before it reaches our network driver. In other words, any pass-through traffic never reaches Bandwidth Manager. Normally in such cases we recommend turning Windows Bridging off and instead using the built-in bridge implementation. Did you have any pro

Re: Command Line Interface (CLI) installation and license keys

4 years ago, by Ann in Connection Emulator Forum

Moving the licence to another computer If at some point you want to move the software from one computer to another, that's absolutely fine. For that, you simply should install the software on the old computer and then install it on the new machine and re-enter the licence key. We do not use node-locking or limit the number of install/uninstall cycles. No Internet connection or contacting us is

Re: Another WiFi network with the same name

4 years ago, by Ann in WiFi Guard Forum

WiFi Guard does not protect you from MITM or Evil Twin. I don't know any software that would, it's a rather complex issue that cannot be simply dealt with by the means of an app. Having said that, if you see two WiFi networks with the same name, it most likely means that your router is dual-band. Dual-band routers broadcast the same network name at two frequencies: 2.4 Ghz (older and slower sta

Re: Choice between bits and bytes

4 years ago, by Ann in NetGenius Forum

Thank you for your feedback. It is a good idea, so we have added a new setting in Preferences that lets you choose between bytes/s and bits/s, to display speeds in KB/s or Kb/s, and so on. To try the new setting, simply download the new build: For other readers: more information on KB/s vs Kb/s difference.

Re: Some options are not available on Mac

4 years ago, by Ann in WiFi Guard Forum

These options are not available in some configurations. In particular, the Auto-Start feature is only currently implemented in Windows version of WiFi Guard. If you want WiFi Guard to open automatically on your Mac, please add it as a login item as explained in this Apple's article: Open items automatically when you log in on Mac The check for updates option is not available in WiFi Guard down

Re: Number of scanned devices changes in every scan

4 years ago, by Ann in Network Scanner Forum

From your message it is hard to tell what exactly you refer to as "problem", so please pick the relevant information below: No MAC addresses are listed This can happen when scanning non-local subnet. See this article for details on scanning non-local subnets and getting MAC addresses. Not all IP addresses are listed That would be because not every IP address has network device associa

Re: Cannot mount 4 GB RAM disk

4 years ago, by Ann in RAM Disk Forum

This shouldn't be happening normally, but try creating a slightly smaller RAM Disk, i.e. 3999 MB. We received a few reports from our users about some weird behaviour in memory allocation routines around the 4 GB threshold, especially in Windows 10 update v1809. Please let us know whether a slightly smaller disk worked for you.

Re: Simulating high latency with high bandwidth

4 years ago, by Ann in Connection Emulator Forum

It sounds like you are using TCP in your tests. For TCP, there is an inherent relationship between latency and maximum bandwidth calculated as: TCP-Window-Size-in-bits / Latency-in-seconds = Bits-per-second-throughput The standard window size on a Windows machine is 2^16 bytes, so this formula gives us 2^16 * 8 / 0.05 = 10,485,760 bits-per-second-throughput. It is exactly what you are observin

Re: Disabling update notifcation

4 years ago, by Ann in NetWorx Forum

To disable automatic update checks, you need to: With the right mouse button click NetWorx icon in the notification area. In the pop-up menu that appears click "Settings": Open the "Main" tab. Untick "Check for updates automatically" at the top left of the tab: Click OK at the bottom of the tab.

Re: ISP Speed Test, maximum and average speeds

4 years ago, by Ann in NetWorx Forum

The setting for choosing maximum and average rates is right there, in the Speed Meter window, as highlighted in the screen shot below. Regarding the monitoring period and number of tries: the test starts with 1 MB buffer and a download/upload is performed. Then the buffer is doubled to 2 MB, 4 MB, 16 MB and so on until the operation takes 10 or more seconds. Once we have a large enough sample f

Re: Number of computers in "Connect To"

4 years ago, by Ann in NetGenius Forum

The free trial does not restrict how many computers you can connect to. The trial if fully-functional and is only limited in its duration (30 days). Common reasons for the absent computes might be: Other machines do not have the NetGenius system service installed. You need to install the service on all machines that you want to manage. Then they will announce their presence on the network.

Re: Tracking the number of devices connected to WiFi network

4 years ago, by Ann in NetWorx Forum

I am afraid neither NetWorx nor NetGenius are the right products for this purpose. These tools only monitor network usage on the computers they are installed on, whereas you need to know usage information for independent devices connecting to your WiFi access points. We have Bandwidth Manager product that may help with that, but you will likely need to change your network configuration. It is u

Re: Will NetGenius be available for macOS?

4 years ago, by Ann in NetGenius Forum

Currently, we have no plans to create NetGenius for macOS, because many NetGenius features are heavily dependent on Windows functionality. If you have been using NetWorx free trial before deciding to purchase it and were happy with its features, the macOS edition of NetWorx should be a good solution for you.

Re: Single licence purchase to use on both Mac and PC

4 years ago, by Ann in NetWorx Forum

Yes, the same licence can be used on either platform. Even the most basic NetWorx licence includes installation on up to 5 devices simultaneously. Each of those devices can run Windows, macOS or Linux. The only thing you need to be aware of is that the Windows edition has more features than the macOS or Linux editions, as the former has been in development for much longer than the latter t

Re: Nested folders are not allowed on a boot disk

4 years ago, by Ann in RAM Disk Forum

Nested folders on a boot-time RAM Disk were not supported until version 4.0.4. If it worked for you before, you probably had a logon-time RAM disk on your Windows 7 system. Or, if you are sure you had a boot-time disk and now you are trying to create a Temp folder with no nested folders inside it, you may be getting this error because you are specifying "Z:\Temp" path in the RAM Disk set

Re: Export scan results to PDF or Excel

4 years ago, by Ann in Switch Port Mapper Forum

Of course! You can save the results to XML, CSV, JSON, HTML or text file. In particular, CSV would be suitable for a spreadsheet program. Plus you can easily turn it into a PDF if you have a PDF printer installed.

Re: Naming/labelling IP ranges

4 years ago, by Ann in Network Scanner Forum

NetScanner already has the ability to assign a comment to each address range. The yellow sticky note icon will let you set a comment and then display it when hovering over that button: Another handy feature is outputting the bookmark name which the IP address belongs to in scan results. For that, you need to create a bookmark for each IP range, and tick "Show bookmark in output".

Re: HTTPS redirecting when user is suspended

4 years ago, by Ann in Bandwidth Manager Forum

I am afraid redirecting HTTPS is not supported. Even if it was possible, the browser most likely would not allow the user to follow such redirect. For example, if a user tries to open https://www.google.com, the software could intercept that connection and respond with a self-signed certificate, at which point the browser would warn the user about possible security risk. There is usually a butt

Why putting Page File on a RAM disk is a bad idea

4 years ago, by Ann in RAM Disk Forum

As you have already read, placing a page file on a RAM disk or any other virtual storage device that uses RAM is indeed a bad idea; it is also irrational and counterproductive. And here is why... Page file (aka swap file, paging file or pagefile) is a reserved portion of a hard disk that serves as an extension of physical memory (RAM). When the system runs out of RAM, it moves less-used RAM con

Re: Some computer information is missing

4 years ago, by Ann in Network Scanner Forum

You can see there are RPC errors in the line with missing information. It is likely to be caused by a firewall. Please see this Microsoft article about troubleshooting WMI connectivity. Also, you most likely need to run the NetScanner as a domain admin to be able to extract data from remote PCs.
