Re: Error C000009A after Windows 10 1809 update

8 months ago, by Andrew in RAM Disk Forum

We have investigated this issue where only disks smaller than 4096 MB could be created in the newest builds of Windows 10. It turned out Microsoft has suddenly changed memory limits in their allocation routines. In tech-speak, there is a function called MmAllocateNodePagesForMdlEx, where Microsoft documentation states: Quote The maximum amount of memory that MmAllocateNodePagesForMdlEx can

Re: RAMdisk size became limited to 4095 MB after Windows 10 1809 update

Looks like the issue is still present in build 17763 that has become the official release. We will publish an update to the RAM Disk app in a couple of days to work around this problem.

Re: Account rights required to lookup logged users

8 months ago, by Andrew in Network Scanner Forum

Most likely you would need to be a domain admin to look up logged on users. Our Network Scanner uses three different methods, whichever succeeds: Windows API call NetWkstaUserEnum() NetBIOS request and response analysis WMI query "SELECT UserName FROM Win32_ComputerSystem" If all that fails, you can try the predefined script called "User logon time" as shown below. I

Good news here! We've investigated this issue, and though it's not clear why it is now happening, it is fixable. It turned out Microsoft has changed something about memory limits in their allocation routines. In tech-speak, there is a function called MmAllocateNodePagesForMdlEx, where the documentation states: Quote The maximum amount of memory that MmAllocateNodePagesForMdlEx can allocate

Re: RAMdisk size became limited to 4095 MB after Windows 10 1809 update

This issue seems to be caused by something Microsoft changed in Windows version 1809 and earlier builds of Insider Previews. From our experience, things are often broken in Windows preview builds, so we'll check how it works once the release is out (it looks like it's only a few days away).

Re: Password is visible in Password Manager

8 months ago, by Andrew in Network Scanner Forum

It does indeed have the password reveal function for convenience. This way the user can make sure a correct password is used in scanning. While, like you mentioned, it could be a security risk, sharing a configuration file invariably means that passwords must go into that file. The passwords are encoded (not clear text), but whoever receives the file has at least two other options to recover t

Re: Transparent graph background

9 months ago, by Andrew in NetWorx Forum

I totally agree with you that Windows 7 is a better system, and that's what we use here too. Thing is the transparent drawing API works in the notification area on Windows 10, but does nothing on Windows 7. If we find a way that works on Windows 7 as well, we will definitely add it to NetWorx.

Re: Separate installer of bandwidth control service

Revoke their administrative privileges on those computers. If they use admin accounts, they can do anything, whether you want them or not. The version of control Bandwidth Control Service and Management Console has to match. Otherwise it will refuse to connect and will report version mismatch.

Re: Transparent graph background

9 months ago, by Andrew in NetWorx Forum

For some reason MS implemented transparent drawing differently on Windows 7 and Windows 10. It works this way, with a transparent notification area graph on Windows 10:

Re: Separate installer of bandwidth control service

The /NOICONS InnoSetup parameter only works if the AllowNoIcons directive was set to "yes", while in our package it's set to "no". Use this special build (file bandwidth_manager_setup.exe), it will work as you require.

Re: Some SNMP requests are not sent

9 months ago, by Andrew in Network Scanner Forum

That's rather odd. I have imported your entries and I can see 4 requests sent (2 for each community per item): Then Wireshark shows: I recommend to try changing the SNMP version in these items from Windows built-in to SNMPv1 to rule out issues with Windows SNMP libraries. This will use our own implementation that doesn't depend on snmpapi.dll and mgmtapi.dll. Also, make sure you

Re: Need separate installer of Bandwidth control service

We don't have a separate installer for the bandwidth control service. You can however use silent installation by launching the regular installer as: bandwidth_manager_setup.exe /COMPONENTS="svc" /SILENT

Re: LAN freezes every 10 minutes exactly

9 months ago, by Andrew in Bandwidth Manager Forum

Yes, try doing these two commands in admin command prompt if the problem occurs again: net stop BMService net start BMService If this helps, the easiest thing is probably setup a watchdog script that tests network reachability and restarts the service should something go wrong.

Re: LAN freezes every 10 minutes exactly

9 months ago, by Andrew in Bandwidth Manager Forum

Unfortunately there isn't much known about this issue. As we have a number of customers running their BM instances 24/7 with zero issues, there seems to be an external reason that only affects a few users, most likely connected to network card drivers. Just a couple of questions to narrow it down: When you say restarting the software does nothing: did you restart the actual Bandwidth Manager

Re: Error when downloading MAC-address or NIC database

9 months ago, by Andrew in Network Scanner Forum

It appears to be caused by an Internet Explorer configuration issue, as the Network Scanner uses its API to download files. As a workaround you can easily download the file manually. Then, if you are using the installed version, unzip the downloaded OUI.TXT to: C:\Users\<UserName>\AppData\Roaming\SoftPerfect Network Scanner\ If you are using the portable version, unzip OUI.TXT into

Re: Custom folders, volume label and drive icon

9 months ago, by Andrew in RAM Disk Forum

It indeed doesn't make sense to use a 24 GB image for a small amount of data. However, for your goals, you don't need to use an image at all: To have a set of predefined folders and a volume label, simply specify those in your RAM disk's properties as shown below. You can specify any number of folders that can also be nested. As the file system we recommend exFAT or NTFS, the former is a bit f

Sorry we can't reproduce this issue - we've tested with JDownloader downloading a 100 MB file and it worked as expected.

Re: Displaying multiple graphs

10 months ago, by Andrew in NetWorx Forum

No, unfortunately in Windows version only one graph is possible (it combines readings from multiple ports). Though at the moment there is a special build of NetWorx available based on the same code as the Linux and macOS versions, which can do that. It has fewer features, but it can display one graph per port. You can download it here.

Re: Error C000009A

Likewise, builds 17692 and 17666 are insider previews. Unfortunately since insider previews often have bugs, we can only investigate the problem if makes it into an official release.

Windows build 17738 is an Insider Preview. From our experience, things are often broken in preview builds, so we'll check how it works when the release is out.

Re: Merge data from two columns into one virtual column

10 months ago, by Andrew in Network Scanner Forum

Those are called regular expressions and can be quite difficult to master. Here is an article in Wikipedia about them. In your case something like this should work. It will match any numbers and periods (decimal points): ([0-9.]+) By the way, if your source column is a Remote File column that connects to shared folder and looks for a file's version, another way to combine the two columns

Re: Enter custom name in the Host Name column

10 months ago, by Andrew in Network Scanner Forum

No, but there is a special column for custom tags or names. It is called Friendly names, see Options - Friendly Names / Comments in the main menu. You can choose to associate custom names with IP addresses, MAC addresses, host names or a combination of these.

Re: How to get Websites traffic in Applications counted correctly

Sorry we can't tell much from these screenshots and would need to see your data records. Back up your usage to a .DB file (Usage Records - Backup), compress it into a .ZIP file and attach it to a support ticket here. Please also mention what exactly doesn't match - it's not clear from the screenshots.

Re: Different values in General and Per Day reports

10 months ago, by Andrew in NetWorx Forum

Most likely the display setting was changed to On-peak or Off-peak rather than All hours. This setting affects what is displayed in the Per Day, Per Week, Per Month and Custom reports. It has no effect on the General tab. So simply choose Display - All Hours, then click Refresh and the numbers should match:

Re: Slow RAM disk on a new gaming laptop

10 months ago, by Andrew in RAM Disk Forum

There could be two reasons why your speeds are low: There may be another disk filter driver or file filter driver that inspects everything written to and read from every disk. Usually this comes in a form of a Internet security product or antivirus, either of which can have a significant impact on performance. There may be a hardware issue with the memory itself and its timings configuration.

Re: Create temporary RAM disk that is not recreated after reboot

10 months ago, by Andrew in RAM Disk Forum

Thank you for your feedback. There isn't exactly a setting for that, but yes it can be easily achieved. Here is how: There is a console version of the program named ramdiskc.exe located in the application folder. It's designed for creating on-demand RAM disks. Any disk created with the console version is not visible in the GUI and disappears upon shutdown. So you could create a couple of sh

Re: Wipe Memory on Dismount option missing

10 months ago, by Andrew in RAM Disk Forum

The availability of this option depends on the type of RAM disk used: A boot-time RAM disk that is mounted on system boot. This type of disk is created by default and the "wipe memory" option is not there because it's simply not necessary. A boot-time RAM disk is unmounted just before the system shuts down or restarts and all RAM is then usually wiped by a built-in BIOS memory test.

By saying "exists", do you mean it keeps files and folders? If so, this link can help: RAM Disk keeps files and folders after shutdown

Re: Does NetWorx bandwidth monitor increase ping?

No, it does not affect ping in any way. We have a separate software package called Connection Emulator to simulate network latency (increased ping) and other connection issues if that's something you want to do.

Re: Deleting ghost A: drive after uninstalling the RAM Disk app

It looks like Windows has retained a mount point somewhere. Check these registry keys: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\MountedDevices HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\DOS Devices As one of these may have A:\ allocated. Alternatively see if you can remove the persistent drive letter from Start - Run - diskmgmt.msc.
